“No. I’m told he’s conscious. I’ll call the hospital now.”
She gritted her teeth to control her emotions. “He’s a special little boy, and I pray he continues to recover. Thank you for your service to our country.”
“Thank you for checking on Frankie.”
Heather ended the call. So many people victimized by one evil person’s act.
“You okay?” Jordan said.
“Yes, I think.”
“Heather, what you said eased the man’s mind.”
“He’s carrying a huge load.”
“As are so many dealing with the crisis. If you’re ready, I’ll see if Mia is awake.”
“I am. She and I connected on the flight.”
Jordan greeted a medical person and activated the speakerphone.
“Mia, this is Heather.”
“How wonderful to hear your voice.” Mia’s labored words struck a distressful chord.
“Are you strong enough to talk? We can do this another day.”
“I... want to. Arrests made?”
“Not yet.”
“You okay?”
“I’m fine. Mia, you need your rest, so I’ll talk fast.” Heather explained how the FBI had uncovered evidence.
“Jerk.”
Heather laughed despite the situation. “Wish I had a lead.”
“Me... too. I’d kill them.”
Heather had no reason to doubt her. “If you recall anything unusual, would you contact a medical person? They’ll call me.”
“K.”
“I wish we had hours together. We can do those things when you’re feeling better.”
“Look forward to it.”
“Oh, I learned my baby is a boy.”
“Congrats.” Mia’s voice faded.
“Can I contact your husband and daughter for you? Dr. Radcom has the number.”
“Please. I’d love that.”
“Consider it done, and I’ll make sure your husband has the number. He can talk to you directly. Get better so we can carve out some girl time.” Heather ended the call and seized a moment to gain control.
