“I don’t need reminding.” Legion scoffs back.
“Then I don’t need to remind you that you owe me, either.” The monster gloats.
“No. You don’t.”
“Good. Because she isn’t going to be so pretty, for much longer… I have many ugly things in store for Keegan’s woman.”
A chill runs up my body as I try to remain still and silent, praying that Legion keeps his promise to me and my baby. That Dean and the Saviors MC rescue us in time.
The monster runs his mangled finger across my cheek, letting it drift lazily down my throat. I twist myself as best I can, away from him, towards Legion, and attempt to stifle my fear.
“And when should we expect our guest of honor?” the monster asks. “Do we have time to toy with her? My hands are no longer capable of what they used to be… But I could instruct you on what I want done to her.”
“Keegan will be here soon. He’s been warned to come alone and unarmed.” Legion coolly replies. “He’s a fool for this one… He’ll do anything for her.”
He’s lying… I heard him tell Dean to come at him with everything he’s got…
I open my eyes to look up at him at the same moment Legion’s eyes drop to mine. For a split second, that mask of indifference slips, and there’s a flash of trepidation in Legion’s expression. He turns his face away from me, back to the monster.
“In the meantime, allow me to introduce you to our other party favor.” Legion’s voice sounds jovial, more lively, all of a sudden, despite the wound in his side that I know is giving him agony. “She’s still unconscious… beneath that Kevlar vest. Go on, have a look at her. I have a feeling she may be more to your liking, Asmodeous… That one, is a little red head...”
We pull over behind Viper’s van, far enough away from the location, that they won’t hear our bikes just yet. Viper exits the van with Axel, carrying his sniper rifle.
“As soon as we’re all in position, I’ll shoot you a text.” Viper says, nodding to Diesel and Chopper. They’ll position themselves on either side of the structure, while Viper and Axel situate themselves on top of the hill towards the front entrance. Viking and I are supposed to ride straight on in, relying on our brothers to shoot from the hills, while our approach draws the Demons’ full attention to us, and with any luck, further away from the structure.
“Just remember,” I say to all of them, “Vanna and Cherry are in that building.”
“I never miss.” Viper says with a cool assuredness, patting Axel on the arm to follow him. Not one for showing much emotion, unless he’s with Rosita, Viper’s already in get it done mode, headed into the woods to take up his position.
Diesel and Chopper take off in opposite directions to man their positions as well, leaving Viking and I alone to await the message from Viper, that everyone is ready to cover us when we roll in.
Axel looks back at me, and I can see that he’s afraid. For Cherry. For Viking and I. If shit goes bad, it’s the two of us who are most likely to die tonight. I tried to talk Viking out of going in with me, but there was no dissuading him.
“Dean…” Axel’s voice is low, a far cry from his typical sun shiny self.
“You promised to stay with Viper.” I remind him.
“And I will… but…” he storms back to me, throwing his arms around my neck as he hugs me tightly. For a moment, he’s that teary eyed little eight-year-old, breaking my damn heart again. “I need you to promise me, too…” his voice cracks, unable to finish his sentence.
I know what he wants to hear from me… but I don’t like breaking promises, least of all to the ones I love most in this world. Especially when there’s a chance, I may not be able to make it up to them.
“I love you, too, kid.” I tell him instead, hugging him tighter for a moment, before I let him go. “Catch up with Viper.”
Axel wipes his eyes, moving on to exchange a quick hug with Viking as well. With one last tearful look back at us, Axel turns and runs into the woods after Viper.
“Fuck.” Viking mutters under his breath, his voice a little tighter than usual. He rubs his eyes with his fingers over the bridge of his nose. “Goddamned gnats.”
“There’s still time for you take up position at the back of the building.” I say, hoping Viking will go along with this final attempt to talk him out of riding straight in with me. “Less risky, and it’s the only spot we don’t have covered.”
He drops his hand from his watery eyes to shoot me a glare. “Fuck you, Dean.” He mutters, getting back on his bike.
A slight laugh escapes me as I mount Serene beside him. “I love you too… asshole.”
It isn’t long before a text from Viper vibrates the phone clutched in my hand.
“Is it go time?” Viking asks, a calmness in his voice, as if we’re only walking into a bar brawl together.
“They’re all in position. Ready when we are.” I look up from the text, to Viking. “There are twenty-five Demons around the building. Twelve of them, right up front.”
He scoffs. “Hardly seems fair.” With a slight grin, he racks the charging handle on his MP5 sub machine gun, then moves the selector switch from safe, to fully automatic. “You ready, bro?”
I nod, shooting Viper a text that we’re about to head in. I shove the phone back in my pocket, then adjust the strap of my Uzi, so the weapon is easy to grab in front of me. Already racked, I switch mine off safety, to automatic, as well.
“No mercy.” I remind him.
“Mercy ain’t my area of expertise.” Viking jokes. “Let’s do this.”
Taking a breath, I hit the starter on Serene. “Fuckin’ Aces.”
