The muscles around Legion’s cold grey eyes tighten as they narrow at me, but he doesn’t answer.
“Legion… If you don’t believe me now about your brother… If this doesn’t end… Believe this... Next time we meet, and bodies hit the floor, they won’t be getting up.”
“Indeed.” He growls.
There’s nothing left to say.
He bolts out the shed door, leaving it to swing on its rusty hinges. I hear the Demons scramble to their bikes and take off as the other group of motorcycles fast approaches. It’s only another few minutes before they arrive just outside the shed. Viking, Viper, Axel, Diesel and Chopper… I can hear my brothers outside.
“If he’s dead, so are you!” Viking’s voice threatens someone, before another motorcycle takes off. His heavy boots stomp towards the old shed door. His massive frame, gun in hand, blocks out the headlights of the bikes behind him.
“I’m still alive.” I sigh, allowing myself a slight smile at the relief I see wash over Viking’s previously hard expression. He had been bracing himself for the worst.
“You look like shit.” He says, before his eyes lift to assess my restrains. “Didn’t bring bolt cutters for these chains.”
I chuckle, cocking my chin weakly at the gun in his hand. “Sure you did… Aim high.”
With a slight grin of his own, Viking takes aim at the chains a few feet above my head and fires twice. In a moment, I’m on my knees on the dirt encrusted shed floor. Squeezing my eyes shut against the pain in my ears from the gun shots, and the throbbing pain in my limbs. I can barely bring my arms to rest in front of me against my own thighs. I haven’t known pain like this in a while.
“Help me get them off…” I wince, unable to do it myself.
“Are they broken?” Axel’s worried voice is close by me. When I open my eyes, he’s crouching beside me with Viking as they both carefully remove the chains and barbed wire from each arm. Once they’re off, I slowly bend and cautiously flex my arms and wrists, testing the damage myself.
“No… just cut and bruised… Circulation is already coming back.” I say. “How did you know where to find me?”
“Your fucking brother.” I hear Viper growl as he, Diesel and Chopper step into the shed with us. That’s why Legion said he’d kill my brother for this… He actually did me a fucking favor for once.
“Where is the asshole now?” I ask.
“Which one?” Diesel jokes. But he knows I mean Daniel. “I don’t know where he went. He took off as soon as he led us here. The fuckin’ Demons scattered, too.”
“I say we blow up their fuckin’ club for this! This is our fuckin’ president!” I glance up at Axel to find his eyes filled with rage. “Where’s your cut?” he demands. “Did they take it?”
“Fuck no.” I mutter. “Wasn’t wearing it tonight… I was at that goddamned party with Vanna and her family. I got a bunch of texts from Janie that she needed help.” I mentally chastise myself for this epic fuck up. I have no one but myself to blame for this. Legion never would have gotten the drop on me, if I had been more cautious… But I’m not ready to dwell on those cold hard facts yet.
“Can you stand?” Axel asks, sliding an arm under mine, to help me up. Between him and Viking, I’m back on my feet in a few seconds.
“I’m fine.” I insist. “No broken bones. The cuts and bruises will heal. Didn’t fuck up my hands. I can still ride. Is my bike still out front?”
“Yeah.” Chopper replies. “We’ll follow you over to the hospital if you think you can ride.”
“I don’t need the hospital.” I insist, feeling my pockets for my phone. It’s gone, though I’m not surprised. “I need to check on Vanna.”
“She’s fine. She’s at your house with Cherry and the prospects. Got no idea what’s going on… Though, she seems a little upset at you.” Viking says.
I don’t blame her. I left her after a shit storm with her family, to rescue another girl that was never even here… Epic failure upon epic failure on my part tonight. I deserve all the Hell I’m going to face from her.
“There’s something I need to do… alone… But I need you guys to make sure Vanna’s safe, until I get back.” I say with a sigh. “I don’t think Legion or his Demons are going to strike out again tonight… But I’m not taking any chances with her, ever again.”
“The fuck are you talking about, bro?” Viking asks. “If you’re not going to the hospital, you’re going home. And if you’re not going home, we’re calling all the brothers in tonight and we’re going after the Demons.”
“We might not have to.” I say, thinking back on Legion’s reaction to the truth about his brother… Shocked disbelief… He really had no idea. I can read people. That was a genuine blow to his psyche.
“The fuck you mean?” Viking scoffs. “Look what they did to you!”
“I’m alive.” I say, exiting the shed. The back of Janie’s old doublewide is a few yards across the over grown property. I left my bike parked out front of it. My side aches a bit where Legion cut me, but I don’t let them see it.
“We need to deal with this shit, Dean.” Viking says. “This needs to be brought to the table for a vote. Enough is enough. What they did to you tonight, what they tried to pull that night with Axel… Play time is over, dude. It’s time we show them who they’re really fucking with.”
