When Dean and I enter Rosita’s hospital room, Viper is hovering over his wife and new born baby girl. Dean immediately spins around to face the door we just entered through, letting out a clipped, mostly whispered, “Fuck!”, and I realize she’s nursing her daughter.

“It’s alright, come in.” Rosita laughs. “Come meet our precious Mia.”

I walk further into the room, but Dean remains standing in the doorway, facing the hall.

Viper gets up from the chair beside her bed, a smile on his tired face as he accepts the flowers I brought, and gestures for me to take his seat.

“Congratulations.” I smile back at him. “Mia is a beautiful name.”

“Spanish for Mine.” he says with beaming pride, setting the vase down on a nearby table. I smile to myself at the protective nature of these men. Mia’s future suitors are in for a real hard time with Viper and his MC brothers, as her watchful guardians.

I take a seat beside Rosita as Viper and Dean step out into the hall together, and stare down at their little new born bundle of joy.

She’s precious. A head of dark curls that match her long lashes, fanned over rosy pink, chubby cheeks. My heart just melts.

“She’s so beautiful.” I say, as I try not to let my eyes well up. “So perfect.”

“Ten fingers. Ten toes.” Rosita sighs. “And her Papa’s strong silence.” She smiles down at her daughter. “She barely made a peep. Viper was so concerned. But she is perfectly healthy… And apparently, full.” Rosita readjusts her baby in her arms, and I help her cover herself up before Dean and Viper return. “Would you like to hold her?”

“Oh… I don’t know… she’s so little…”

“Mia, this is your Tia, Vanna.” Rosita says gently, shifting to make it easier for me to lift her daughter.

My heart is beating rapidly in my chest as I carefully take her baby into my arms and immediately sit back down in the chair. I stare down into her little face as her eyes blink for a few moments, and then remain closed, already drifting off to sleep.

“Must have been quite a day for you.” I whisper, then look up at Rosita. She seems a little tired herself, but happy. “Both of you.”

“Go ahead. Ask me.” She insists.

“What?”

“Ask me how it went. I know about your Youtubes, Vanna.” She lightly laughs.

I have to chuckle at her words, though I do confess, “I haven’t been brave enough to watch any birthing videos, yet.”

She laughs at me again. “Viper and I waited until I was a month away. I’m glad we did. My pregnancy was fairly easy, as far as pregnancy goes. Had we watched sooner, I may have caused myself stress and worry for a longer duration. We have enough to contend with, being pregnant, as is. And our babies are coming out, one way or another.”

“So, it’s still something you recommend doing… Just, wait a while?”

“It made me change my mind about my original birth plan.”

I swallow, my mouth suddenly feeling dry. I glance down at her baby in my arms, admiring the little miracle for a few moments, before I look back up at Rosita. “We had to leave last night. MC stuff. Were you in labor long? Were you scared? Was it bad?”

She smiles, seemingly at peace with whatever they went through last night. “It was worth it.”

Dean and Viper walk back into the room, and I stand up, ready to hand Viper back his baby girl, but not before I catch a glimpse of Dean staring at me. A smile instantly replaces the somewhat troubled look he’s worn since last night. His eyes light up. I know instinctively, what he’s thinking about as he walks up to us. His eyes drop to look down at the precious little bundle of joy in my arms, swaddled in pink and sleeping soundly.

“She’s a perfect little angel.” He says softly, his eyes lift as he smiles at Rosita. “She looks just like you, hermosa.” Dean shifts his gaze to Viper, and jokes, “Gracias a Dios!”

Jason is already waiting for me when I pull Serene into the lot by the small playground on the river, where we usually meet. He’s leaning up against his police cruiser, arms folded, a file tucked under one arm. I pull Serene over in the space next to him and shut her down. Removing my helmet, I dismount and hang it up on her handle bar. Jason pushes off his cruiser and approaches me. We shake hands briefly. It’s been a while since we’ve met up like this.

“There was an assault yesterday. Breaking and entering. No theft, but the guy was hospitalized. In fact, he’s still unconscious.” Jason says.

I crook a brow at him. “Are you asking if it was me?” I’m honestly surprised he’s coming at me with this… Especially with the arrangement we’ve had the last few years. Though, it’s been a while. Since before Jack Nero. I haven’t carried out a hit in months.

“No. I know it wasn’t. I’m just following protocol. The girlfriend named you and Vanna as possible suspects.” Jason replies.

“The cashier? You gonna send a cop to talk to Vanna?”
