CHAPTER NINE
DEAN
To say that it’s been difficult not to shout from the rooftops, that Vanna and I are having a kid, is the understatement of the century. I remember being excited about Maddie. Though having been through that entire experience, the festering wound I carried inside for years over it, experiencing this now with Vanna, it’s as if there’s been a massive shift in reality.
There have been several moments in my life, where I can honestly say that time had divided into two parts. Before the event, and after it. The first, and most monumental up until now… The death of my mother. Second, Lucinda’s betrayal regarding Maddie. Third, when I first laid eyes on Vanna. And finally, the night Vanna told me she was pregnant with my baby. These moments forever changed my life in the most profound of ways. This new reality, may be the most significant divide of time I’ve yet to experience.
I’ve managed to keep the news to myself, sneaking peeks now and again at the blurry little black and white, kiss stamped blip I’ve got in my wallet, whenever I’ve had a moment alone. I’ve wanted to tell my brothers since I found out.
Today, Vanna gave me her blessing to tell my MC when I’m ready. And now that the moment is here, I need my brothers to do something for me. For us. I wasn’t joking around when I told her my protective tendencies over her have gone into overdrive. They have. And this will bring her another level of protection. Though, what I’m about to ask of them, has always been in the cards.
“The prospects have character interviews next month with Medusa’s Gates. The rest of us have been cleared. Their contract is almost up with the security company they’ve been working with since Preacher cut ties. By the time that happens, as long as they don’t find something we missed, we should be all cleared for guard duty.” Viper announces.
“What about rescue missions?” Axel asks, attempting to contain his eagerness. He’s always wanted to take part in extractions.
“We’ll be the first to know if they require assistance.” Viper says, cocking his chin towards Diesel next. “How are we making out with Stogies?”
I’m practically chomping at the bit by the time Diesel is through updating us on the profits Stogies has brought into the club. Though thankfully, it’s more good news. We’re making a decent profit.
“That brings us to our next update.” Viper says. “The Saviors MC’s second Charter headed up by Torque, Gears, Rider, Kace, Slugger and Dutch, have invited us down to Murphy’s Inlet for a party at their newly established club house.”
The men around the table bang their fists and raise their voices in celebration of the good news. It’s always been my uncles plan for the Saviors MC to expand and to press forward with our mission.
“And with that, let’s close out church on a high note.” Viper says.
“Actually, hold up a minute, guys.” I interject, grabbing their attention once again. “Now that we’ve got the business end of things out of the way, I’d like to bring something to a vote. Something important to me. This requires a unanimous vote from you all, to pass. So, just let me say a few things, before we get to that.” Glancing around the table at my MC brothers, some of them look curious. Though Viking is wearing a knowingly annoying expression on his face. I’d wonder why, if I wasn’t so eager to have my way.
“Vanna’s birthday is coming up real soon. I met her just after it had passed last year, so, this will be the first birthday she has with me, and I want it to be special.” They’re all looking at me now, like I’m pussy whipped. I clear my throat and continue. “As you all know, she’s agreed to be my wife. We live together. I’ve already signed everything over to her in the event of my death. A marriage license is just a piece of paper, really, at this point. And, as you all know, a legal marriage isn’t a requirement for this...”
“Holy fuck, bro. Just spit it out.” Viking groans impatiently.
I shoot him a quick glare, before continuing. “I want Vanna recognized as my Old Lady, officially.”
“Shocker.” Viking grunts.
I ignore him. “I want her in the books as our First Lady. And that can’t happen, without a unanimous vote from you guys… So, let me hear it. The questions and concerns. Give me the opportunity to convince you all that this is the right move, for me, and for the club.”
“Like we don’t already love Vanna.” Axel smiles. “She proved herself already, Dean. We know she’d do anything for you. And that means she’d do whatever you asked of her for the club, too.”
I notice Viper exchange glances with Viking, as Viper gets up from the table and walks over to the small closet. He removes a shallow black box from the top shelf, and returns to the table. Placing it down, he slides it to me.
“It isn’t donuts this time either.” Viking chuckles.
“Hope this isn’t stepping on your toes, brother. But, we’re way ahead of you.” Viper says with a rare half smile. “Cherry and Rosita picked it out for her, together. Figured the women would do a better job than any of us.”
“Yeah, we’re more about the removal of chicks clothing than buying chicks clothes.” Viking jokes.
“Open it.” Viper insists. “Your unanimous vote is in there, too.”
I know I’m already smiling as I flip the top of the shiny black box open, gently pulling away the tissue paper the leather cut is wrapped in. It’s folded neatly, rocker side up, inside the box.
Vanna. Property of Dean, on sewn patches round the Saviors MC Skull and Angel wings logo.
I can feel the tightness in my throat forming, making it difficult to swallow, but I do.
“Well, fuck.” I manage to choke out. “Unanimous, huh?”
Viking stands to slap me on the back. “Unanimous, bro.”
