Now I’m sure she wanted to say something to me at the register, having snuck her number into my groceries. Storing her number into my phone, I wonder what this could be about. Though right now, I don’t have the time to worry about it. I’m already running late.

Grabbing my purse, I head back out to meet up with Latisha.

“How do you want to play this?” Viking asks, once we have our bikes parked at the end of the driveway in the cul-de-sac Lucinda’s home sits in.

“I’m just gonna knock on the door and ask him to step outside.”

“Ask him? Or yank him?” Viking chuckles.

“I guess we’ll see.” I say, dismounting my bike. “You guys hang back, unless it looks like I’m gonna kill him. Then stop me.”

I make my way up their little brick walkway, up the steps to their white, colonial style home. Pulling the storm door open, I knock four times and wait, listening intently to what’s going on inside. Little feet patter across the hardwood, the curtain on the window beside the door moves slightly.

“But it’s uncle Dean?” I hear Maddie’s puzzled voice say through the door. They’re lucky she’s home. That will motivate me to keep my temper in check… to an extent. If they’re smart, they will send her up to her room. They’re cowards, though. So, I expect to have to work around a child shield.

“That’s right, darlin’. It’s Uncle Dean.” I say calmly. “Open the door, sweetheart.”

“Dean…” I hear Lucinda’s shaky voice say nearer to the door. “Daniel’s not here.”

“Whether that’s true or not… I’ve got a few questions for you as well. Why don’t you come out here? Let’s have a little chat.”

She’s silent now. All I can hear is Maddie questioning her mother as to why she’s not opening the door and letting me in.

“You can’t hide forever, Lucinda… And if you were innocent, you wouldn’t be hiding from me to begin with.”

“Dean… I don’t know what you think you know…” she nervously says.

“Then come out here and clarify everything for me. You know I’m not going to hurt you. Especially not in front of Maddie.”

“I… I don’t know that.” She nearly whispers.

“Then you really must have done some heinous shit.” And if that’s the case… I honestly don’t know what I’ll do to her. I’d like to think I’m above actually strangling a woman. She’d be the first. I try not to think of everything that happened in the cabin. The last thing I want to do, is get myself heated with Maddie so near.

“I can’t talk to you here… with your men outside… I can’t.”

“Why not?”

“I’m afraid… And my daughter is here.”

“Send her upstairs, and either let me in, or come out here… You’re only prolonging the inevitable.”

“I know how you can get.” She pushes back.

“I’m losing what little patience I have for you, Lucinda. But you have my word, I will not lay a hand on you. Just, come out here, look me in the fucking eyes, and answer the few questions I have for you.”

Another bout of silence, before I hear him speak. Of course, she’s already fucking lying to me.

“Get fucking lost, asshole.” Daniel says through the door. “We’re not doing this now.”

The sound of my brother’s voice sends another surge of adrenaline into my already heated blood. My fist collides with the hardwood door, making the knocker bounce, and my already raw knuckles split against it.

“Get out here.” I can barely form the words through my clenched teeth.

“Leave, or I’ll call the cops.” He threatens, though I know it’s an idle one.

“Call them.” I chuckle darkly, removing my fist from the door, which is now sporting a bloody knuckle stamp on the white paint. “Perhaps Lucinda would prefer to explain what I found in that house, to the police?” Another bout of silence, I don’t even hear Maddie. They must have done the right thing and sent her to her room. “Alright. Have it your way. I hope you have a low deductible.”

Walking back down the porch steps, I grab a fist sized rock from the garden along the walk way, and head for the driveway where Lucinda’s fuckin’ Lexus is parked. Cocking my arm back, I pitch the fucking rock right through her back window, shattering the glass, and the alarm blares. Stepping around her car, over to my dickhead brother’s truck, I look in the back of the bed for something to beat her fucking SUV with.
