“More blood?” he glowers at me, as if he resents me for making him do this to himself.

This wasn’t me at all!

He’s about to drag the knife across his body again when I grab his wrist, my other hand gripping his tense shoulder.

“No! Stop it!” I nearly shout at him. He lets me pull the blade away from his body. “Jesus, look at you… Have you done all of this to yourself?”

Legion gets to his feet, grabbing his cut and slipping it back on to cover his back and shoulders, as if he’s suddenly ashamed.

“What happened to you?” I ask. He’s still scowling at me, but he doesn’t answer. He grabs the hoodie, wiping the blood on his chest with it. My eyes drift back to his shoulder. The one with the woman’s face on it. She looks like an old school depiction of a fortune teller.

“My mother.” He finally says. “I got this half skull portrait done in memory of her.”

“Oh.” I meet his pale eyes once again. “Is she the one who taught you magic? Witchcraft?”

His expression twists further into something of disgust. “She’s the one who taught me everything I know of this wretched world.” He mutters, jamming the knife back in the sheath at his side. “She was a whore.” He adds with contempt, watching me intently, as if he expects a particular reaction out of me. “A whore… who cared more for her next fix than anything… or anyone, else.”

“I see.” I say softly, unsure of how to react, or of why he’s giving me this sad glimpse into his childhood past with a neglectful mother. His distorted view of women is starting to make a little more sense now...

“You see nothing.” Legion scoffs, those intense eyes of his burning into me like white hot dry ice. “Dangerous. Considering how much you like to play with fire.” He remarks. “It’s no wonder you’re drawn to a Demon. I saw the way you looked at me when we met at that bonfire… The way you looked at me in your shop… The way you trembled when I kissed your hand… tasted your lips.”

“I was intrigued by you, when we first met… You do have an undeniable energy… A dark, alluring aura… But I was afraid of you, before, in the cellar… That’s why I was trembling. Fear. That’s it.”

“Lies.” He mutters.

I shake my head. “I’m in love with Dean Keegan. That will never change. It will never falter. Don’t lie to yourself by believing otherwise.” Letting out another sigh, I watch his expression twist slowly into another grimace. “Legion,” he nearly flinches as I call him by his road name again. “Tell me what happened… Maybe I can help you-”

“Help me?” he snaps at me with contempt. “You gonna save my soul, Vanna? That rotted away long ago.”

“What do you want from me?”

“For now, just your trust.”

“I’m not sure I can give that…”

“Our lives depend on it.”

“I have to tell Dean…”

“Then tell him. I’m not asking anything else of you.”

I’m not sure what else to say. If there’s anything else to say. “I have to go. I can’t be here with you. I can’t ever do this again. I have to go, now.”

He nods. “This will all come to an end, the next time we meet.”

“And when will that be?”

His gaze drops to my belly for a moment. “Soon…” he almost sighs, meeting my eyes once more. “Your world will be a safer place, before he’s born. I’ll make it so, Vanna. I promise...”
