She smiles a little guilty smile at me, reaching for her milkshake to sip.
“Dean put you up to this, didn’t he?” I almost laugh.
“I didn’t say anything!”
“Well, clearly this wedding isn’t happening until after Ace is born. And I need some time to recoup and adjust after he’s born. So, you can tell your little cohort, that at the earliest, it wouldn’t be until June next year.”
“See? How hard was that!” Cherry smiles, putting down the milk shake to grab her little leatherbound planner and pen. She flips it open to scribble something down. “We will start planning for June, then. Dean will be thrilled to know you’ve at least picked a month!”
“He so put you up to this.” I shake my head at her.
“Indoor or outdoor?” she smirks back at me.
I grab a fry and playfully throw it at her as we both laugh.
“June is only nine months away, Vanna. These things take time to plan. And depending on where you actually want to get married, you have to book in advance.”
“Now you sound like my mother.” I sigh.
She scrunches her nose. “Have you heard from her? Or your sister?” I can tell she’s a little uncomfortable about asking as she shifts on the couch.
“No. I’m sure they’re waiting for me to reach out, since somehow, I’m the bad guy again and they expect me to apologize.”
“That sucks. I’m sorry. It must be hard.”
I’m not going to complain to Cherry about my family, not after learning her heartbreaking history.
So, I simply smile back at her. “I’ve still got you guys.”
“Magnum claims he wants peace.” Viper says, now that it’s only him, Viking, Axel and myself, that have lingered in the War Room after the Knights came and went. “You believe him?”
“No.” I say. “I don’t think he wants war with us, but I don’t think he’s an ally, either. Legion worked him once, he can do it again. I don’t believe we’ve heard the last from the Demons, and until I know where Legion lands on everything I told him that night, I’m not even going to entertain the idea of trusting the Knights. Shane was strike one. I’ve lost track of what strike they’re on now, but as far as I’m concerned, they’re fucking out.”
“They’re a bunch of fuckin’ dicks anyway.” Viking mumbles.
I shift in my seat to face him. “What was that, anyway?” I ask. “That exchange between you and that Knight when we tried to get at Legion? Seemed like there was a thing there between you two, and that blonde sweetbutt.”
“Nothing.” He insists. “I don’t even remember it.”
I don’t have it in me right now to break his balls about it. There was something up with Vanna before I left this evening, that’s got me eager to go sort out, next.
“You look exhausted, Prez.” Viper comments, a knowing grin on his face. “Vanna keeping you up all night with her? And not in the way she used to, either.” He chuckles. “Believe me, I know how it is.”
I let out a sigh. It’s true, our sex life has been on the decline, but I can’t blame her. She’s so uncomfortable now at her size, and I don’t want to risk hurting her. Whenever we do make love now, I’m extra cautious and make it a point to be delicate with her.
“On that note, gentleman, I’m going home.”
“You’re home earlier than I expected.” Vanna says. She’s standing in the kitchen, wearing one of my old t-shirts stretched across her belly and a pair of fuzzy slippers.
“Did you have fun with Cherry tonight?” I ask, hanging up my cut and leaving my boots at the front door.
“By fun, do you mean, did she complete her mission?” she asks, with a look of playful suspicion as she narrows her eyes at me.
“How about that bath you mentioned earlier?” I feign an attempt to distract her from this line of questioning.
“Scoundrel.” She says under her breath. “Alright, let’s take a bath.”
“You go lay down while I set that up for us, doll.” I wink at her. It’s a big tub and takes a few minutes to fill up. “You want the lavender shit? Or the pomegranate, was it?”
