“Nothing happened.”
“You were fucking threatened.” I snap. She doesn’t bother arguing now. “The fuck did he say?”
“For me to keep myself and my demon spawn away from Gina. So, you see, he knows I’m pregnant. He really could have been the one that left it. I just know it wasn’t a prospect.”
I grab my phone off the night table and bring up Axel’s number.
“What are you doing?”
“Having Axel look up this fucker’s address so I can add him to my ever-growing to-do list.” I say, typing out my request and hitting send. I toss my phone back onto the night table, laying back down against the pillow.
“Dean.” She sighs my name and I twist my head to look at her. She’s wearing a slightly concerned expression. “Nothing happened… And I don’t want you doing anything that might land you in trouble. He’s not worth it.”
“You’re worth it. Our baby, is worth it. I will never take lightly, anything that involves you or Ace. Least of all, a threat.” I tell her sternly. “Though I suppose I should be slightly relieved that perhaps Legion doesn’t know you’re pregnant. That maybe we don’t have a Demon among the Saviors’ prospects after all.”
“You don’t…” she says, “But…”
“Jesus fuck, Vanna…” I let out an agitated sigh, facing the ceiling once again as I pinch the bridge of my nose, squeezing my eyes shut. I’m probably going to regret asking this, but, “What now?”
She hesitates for a moment, before she finally speaks. “I wanted to tell you something, that day I got the black roses at my job… I just, didn’t want it to become something with Laura right there.”
I knew it. She was holding back on me that day.
Vanna lets out a little breath before she continues. “Legion does know, because I was the one who told him I’m pregnant. He’s known for a while.”
The fuck?!
I damn near give myself whiplash as I twist my head to look at her again. “When was this?” I try to remain calm as I ask, but my expression must be speaking volumes on its own.
She hesitates, swallowing hard before she speaks. “The night I went to get answers from him about Lucinda’s letter. I found out for certain, earlier that night. I thought if he knew I was pregnant, he would be less of a threat. That maybe it would draw out whatever gentleness he might have dwelling inside him. You’ve said since he came to the shop last year, you think he has feelings for me. I thought if he knew, it would soften him somehow… That I could play on his feelings and find out what’s actually going on with him… But it didn’t work.”
A Molotov cocktail of emotions I can’t even begin to decipher, churn inside of me… There’s so much I want to say right now, but only one thing comes out. “I should have been the first to know.”
“I know, and I’m sorry… Looking back now, I probably shouldn’t have said anything. He was there the night before, when I had the blood test run and…”
“Fuckin’, what?” I sit up straight in the bed, twisting to look down at her lying by my side. “And I’m just hearing of this now, too?”
“He didn’t hurt me. He didn’t threaten me. He actually helped me. I didn’t mention it, because I didn’t want to worry you. I figured I was either dehydrated or just in shock, but… I fainted in the parking lot after the blood test. You were out all night with Viking and Axel, and the next morning we had that big fight about Lucinda…”
My mind is reeling and the call to violence begins to surge through me. Words spill forth like a torrent. “I’ve asked you this question once before, and you dodged it. I’m asking it again and you had better answer me with the truth now, Vanna… How many times have you met with Legion behind my back?”
She stares up at me with a bewildered look, as if she’s astonished by my reaction. Then she frowns, sitting up to face me.
“What are you trying to imply?”
“Just answer the fucking question... For once.”
“I don’t like your tone.”
“I don’t like a goddamn word you’ve said these last few minutes.”
“Well, I can rectify that for you!” she snaps, throwing the covers back and jumping out of bed.
“What are you doing?” I get up before she can round the corner of the mattress, beating her to the foot of the bed.
“Leaving!” she says, as if that’s actually going to happen. “Sleep alone!”
“You ain’t leaving, doll. Not with my mother’s ring on your finger, and certainly not with my kid inside you.”
