A newer nurse, Sheila, gapes at me, “You mean while you were taking advantage of a young woman in the on-call room?”

I glare at her while seeing red, “I don’t take advantage of anyone. I’m not that kind of man, if you have a problem, I suggest you take it up with Human Resources. Until then, what I do is none of your business. It’s not my job to be checking on her consistently, that’s your job. Is it not?”

Gail, the charge nurse, glares at her, “Yes, doctor.”

“Gail, she’s being transferred to the burn unit. I want a Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialist to be in her room by the end of the day.”

“Of course, Dr. Lexington. I’ll take care of it, personally.”

“Thank you. Oh, and Sheila?”

“Yes, Dr. Lexington?”

“You’re new here and officially at the very top of my shit list. The last place you want to be. I hope you enjoy catheters.”

I won’t really put her on catheter duty. This is a children’s hospital, and I don’t want her to be dealing with my kids when I’ve pissed her off. Although, the next time she has to put a catheter in, I guarantee she’ll think of me and wonder if I’m the reason she was assigned to it.

After throwing away my PPE gear, I make my way to the sixth floor, the burn unit, where Ivy will be for the foreseeable future. I step out of the elevator and immediately grab a new gown, gloves, and a mask.

As I walk away, “Liam,” the voice behind me sends shivers down my spine.

“Hey, baby girl,” I turn around, and she’s so upset. “What’s going on?”

“You have to get a mask, gown, and gloves on first.”

She nods, sets her purse down, and gets into her PPE gear.

“Follow me, Mercy. We’ll go talk.”

We stop by the nurses station, “Dr. Lexington and Social Worker Mercy Madison. We’re here for Ivy Reynolds. She’s in surgery, we’ll be in the on-call room taking a nap. I want to be called the second she’s out of surgery. And then again when she’s out of recovery.”

“Of course, doctor. We have four on-call rooms up here; you could have separate rooms.”

I roll my eyes, “We’re fine. Thank you for your concern,” The last thing I want is to be separated from her.

We walk to the room and take off our PPE.

“You need sleep, sweetheart. But first I’ll tell you what you want to know. Come lie down with me.”

I lock the door and strip down to my boxers, and she laughs.

“How can I sleep with you nearly naked?”

“You’ll manage.”

I put my arms behind my head, while she takes her shoes off and I enjoy the show. She takes her skirt and top off and places them over the chair, so they don’t get wrinkled. Unfastening her bra, she slides it down her arms and puts it on top of her clothes. Standing there staring at me, her lips turn into a seductive smile.

“Talk, Dr. Lexington.”

I clear my throat, “I’m not sure I remember how.”

“I could put my clothes back on.”

“That will not be necessary,” I motion with my finger for her to come over to me.

She climbs beside me and lays her head on my chest.

I take a deep breath, “When I went back into her room her right arm was clearly infected. From elbow to wrist, it was pure blisters. It was bubbled, I’ve honestly never seen anything like that and neither has Xander. I have a Pediatric Infectious Disease expert coming today. This infection is very aggressive. He thinks she may have sepsis.”
