I try to compose myself and then walk into the room where the man who hates me most waits for me.
Opening the door, I walk through, “Sir.”
“Doctor, thank you for seeing me.”
“If this is about more threats, you should know that Mercy ended things like you wanted, so there’s no point. I haven’t even seen her for three weeks.”
“Sit down. I have difficult news for you.”
My heart drops, “Is this about Mercy?”
He nods.
I take a seat across from him.
“You’re the last person I wanted to come to for help. But you may be the only one that can help at this point.”
He takes a shaky breath, “Mercy has cancer.”
While I sit with a stoic expression on my face, inside, I’m screaming,NO NO NO NOT HER!I have lost so many to cancer. God please, not again. Not Mercy.I don’t know everything. But I do know I will not live through her death.
“What kind?” I ask, dragging my hand down my face.
“Cervical and ovarian.”
“Stage?” I ask.
“One.”
I breathe a sigh of relief, “Oh, well if there's a cancer to have, that’s it. She’ll be fine, they can do a hysterectomy and get rid of it. You scared the hell out of me.”
He shakes his head, “Yes, that’s what was recommended.”
“Good. Is that all?” This man makes me uncomfortable and honestly angry. I don’t want to be in his presence longer than necessary.
I stand, and he glares at me, “No that’s not all. Sit down.”
Lowering back into the chair, I stare at him, waiting for whatever else he says.
“She has refused surgery, because it’ll make it so she can’t have children.”
“What? She can’t do that. It’s not elective surgery.”
“That’s why I need your help. She loves you. You’re the only person that she’ll listen to.”
I shake my head, “Maybe that was true. But she won’t even speak to me anymore.”
“My daughter's feelings for you have not changed.”
“That’s hard to believe, since she won’t even respond to a text message.”
The irony is not lost on me. It wasn’t that long ago that it was me that wouldn’t respond to her. Maybe this is exactly what I deserve.
“Look, I know I’m responsible for her not talking to you. But I’m asking you to help me save my little girl. My wife cannot lose another child to cancer.”
“I’ll do anything for Mercy. Just don’t expect too much. Where is she?”
He breathes a sigh of relief, “New York, at my house.”
