“Get the vouchers.” His grin escaped. “We’ll figure it out.”

The hopelessness in her eyes gutted him, and he stopped smiling. “Just get the vouchers.”

He got off at the next exit while she stuck it to the poor airline employee who had the unfortunate luck of taking her call. Once Clara realized she had no other option, she stopped yelling and hammered out a voucher deal that would cover a trip for two to Hawaii.

Zane pulled into a gas station, parked, and opened the mapping app on his phone. He plugged in Fiber Kingdom as their destination. She ended the call and sat staring straight ahead, not even seeming to realize they were parked.

“Five days? Your meeting is Friday morning, I assume? What time?”

“Ten. Which is one our time, with the time change.”

Hope, anticipation, and excitement tangled into a fireball of exhilaration as he showed her the screen of his phone. “It takes thirty-nine hours to drive from this gas station to the parking lot of Fiber Kingdom. We currently have one hundred twenty-one and a half hours remaining. Let’s road trip it.”

Silence.

“Minus driving time, that gives us eighty-two plus hours for sleeping, eating, and sex. Lots and lots of sex.”

She took a deep breath and blew it out slowly. “We said one night, and I made myself clear. No more…anything.”

“We said one night yesterday under very different circumstances. Last night was not average sex. I don’t know what kind of sex you’ve had, but for me that was the best sex of my life. I want more. Don’t you?”

Color rose in her cheeks. “I’m calling another airline.”

He covered the screen of her phone with his hand. His fingers brushed hers, the first time he’d touched her since he’d promised to keep his hands to himself. They both jolted. “Yes, you could call another airline. I’m sure you could pay a ridiculous sum of money and get a flight that would land you on the beach by tonight, but then you wouldn’t get to have hours of mind-blowing, endorphin-creating, earth-shaking sex with me.”

Her violet gaze went hazy, and she swallowed hard. He’d seen that expression on her face multiple times last night, and he knew what it meant. She was as affected by the idea of getting naked again as he was.

She shook his hand off her phone and began searching. “I’m not asking you to drive across the country.”

“No, you’re not. I’m offering because I enjoy your company. We could fly, but it wouldn’t be as much fun.” He wasn’t giving up. “I’ll find great restaurants along the way.”

She kept her gaze on her phone.

“There will be chocolate involved.” Inspiration struck again. “Yarn. I bet there are some cool yarn destinations between here and California. I’ll find them and take you there.”

Her gaze lifted.

“Did you say yarn?”

He nodded, heart igniting.

“And sex?” It looked like she was trying not to smile.

“So much sex.”

“I’m still going to price other flights.”

“Knock yourself out, but while you’re beating your desperate head against airline greed, the clock is ticking.”

“Three thousand dollars is absolute thievery. You know that, right?” Cost of fuel, only seats left were in first-class, blah, blah, blah. She didn’t buy it. Since Clara had a Plan B, she wasn’t as livid as she’d been on the phone with her original airline. “I’ll pass, but thanks for your time.”

She hung up and hit the online sites.

She shouldn’t be considering Zane’s offer. Her attraction for this man had sent her running so far and fast it had taken her ten years to get back on course. Last night had been so incredible that she’d missed her flight. Who knows what might happen after another couple of days with him? But the part of her that wanted to find out was growing bigger by the minute.

“Clara?”
