With a shake of my head, I grab the doll from Jade before she can pummel the poor idiot some more, then toss it across the room. “Let’s go,” I order, and her eyes meet mine before they roam over my face.
“You look mad.”
“I am,” I tell her truthfully as I hold out my hand. “Let’s go.”
“You can’t be mad at me. I didn’t do anything.”
“Let’s fucking go,” I growl, and she steps closer, getting up on her tiptoes, placing her face an inch from mine.
“Do not curse at me, Maverick.”
“Then fucking listen to me, Jade.” I glare down at her, pissed at myself for not handling that situation better, pissed at her for being so fucking beautiful that men want her, and pissed in general that she’s not even mine to claim.
Getting toe to toe with me, she places her finger against my chest. “I don’t have—” She doesn’t finish; I sink my fingers into her hair, cover her mouth with mine, and thrust my tongue between her lips, cutting off her words. Her arms wrap around my shoulders on instinct, and her breasts press against my chest as I kiss her, not giving a fuck who is around us to witness it.
“The cops are coming,” someone yells, and I rip my mouth off Jade’s. My chest feels strange as I look down into her pretty eyes, which seem more brown than hazel right now.
“We should go.” Tanner walks over with Cybil.
“Yeah, and you and I have a lot to talk about,” Cybil tells Jade while handing her her bag and jacket.
“We’ll meet you outside,” Mason says, walking past us holding Margret’s hand.
“Where is Blake?” I ask, then feel a hand on my shoulder.
“I’m right here.” He walks around us, heading to the door with his arm around Everly’s waist. We follow everyone out the entrance of the bar and head across the parking lot toward where Tanner and I parked, since we were the only two who drove, knowing the girls would each be in their own cars, besides Cybil and Jade.
“I would like to just point out that the whole fight-and-police-being-called business was not my fault,” Margret says, and then her eyes go to Jade. “Did I imagine it, or did you really beat that guy with a shirtless cowboy blow-up doll?”
“That totally happened.” Cybil laughs. “And he deserved it. What kind of guy just walks up to a woman and gropes her?” She shakes her head in disgust. “I’m glad I kicked him in the nuts—he totally deserved that.”
“You girls are lucky you weren’t hurt,” Tanner tells his wife, not finding the situation as funny as she does. Then again, who knows what might have happened. That guy was at least twice the size of Cybil and Jade, so if he had decided to put his hands on either of them, they could have been seriously injured.
“Yes, we are, but he still deserved what he got.” Cybil shrugs, then looks at her husband. “Do you think we can stop to get breakfast food?”
“Oh, pancakes sound delicious,” Everly says, and I look down at Jade.
“I could definitely eat,” Jade agrees.
“We might as well go out to eat, since we can’t go back into the bar, and there’s nowhere else for us to be,” Margret says.
“Thank you,” Everly tells her, grabbing her hand.
“And while we’re there, we can talk about the fact that Maverick and Jade have obviously been seeing each other and keeping it from all of us.” Margret grins.
“We are not talking about that,” I tell her, and she smiles at me like Sure, whatever you say.
“How long has it been going on? Since the first time you met or since you moved here?” Margret keeps going just like the annoying little sister that she is.
“It’s none of your business,” Blake tells her, and she rests her hands on her hips.
“I think as a family we all should know everything about each other.”
“And I think that if Mav and Jade want us to know, they will talk to us,” Mason tells her, then opens the passenger-side door of her car for her. “Get in, babe, so that we can go get some food, then head home early.”
“This is our first night out in forever, and you want to go home early.” She looks up at him, pouting out her bottom lip, and he shakes his head.
“Your parents are watching Taylor. That means we got the house to ourselves when we get home.”
“Oh.” Her eyes widen and fill with understanding. “Right, let’s hurry up and eat, then get home.”
Laughing, he shuts the door, then looks around the group. “Meet you all there.”
I lift my chin and open the passenger door of my truck, helping Jade into her seat before I shut the door. Really, I’m surprised that she’s not arguing with me about leaving her car; then again, she might know that she is in no shape to drive. “Meet you guys at the restaurant,” I tell Tanner and Blake as I open the driver’s door.
