As if the universe summoned him, Cole appeared, his face paling the second he laid eyes on me. “Again?” he asked.

“I’m fine.”

“That’s some bullshit, Sofia, and you know it.”

“Whoa, Kandon. Watch your mouth. That’s my sister you’re talking to.”

“Yeah, well, maybe you should ask her how many times she’s really fainted in the last few weeks.”

“Sofe?” Aaron said, but I only had eyes for Cole.

“You promised,” I said, emotion rushing up my throat.

“Yeah, well I’m done keeping your secret.”

Ice froze around my heart.

He’d betrayed me.

The one person I’d confided in about everything had betrayed me.

But it was probably a good thing. Because had he kept his word, I might have read too much into it. I might have begun to think that he actually cared about me.

And getting attached was dangerous…

Especially when I had this feeling that I might not be around long enough to fall in love.
