“I’m just trying to distract you so you won’t break down in front of everyone,” she says, a tense smile forming. “I think it’s time to leave, Sophie.”

“Butch isn’t here yet,” I say as she blots the beer off my dress.

“No, sweetie,” she says. Her voice is so tight. I can tell she’s about to scream. “I mean leave L.A. We need to get you out of here—away from all of this—before something really bad happens.”

“Maybe you’re right,” I whisper. “I’m so tired, Mom.”

“I know, honey.” She looks up at me, nodding. “Dad and I will take you home tonight. We can leave this behind. Just breathe right now. Nice deep breaths.”

I close my eyes and try to just concentrate on breathing.

“Did Millie get the clone?” Mason says from above me.

“Yeah,” Raine whispers. “Apparently Nash took off his t-shirt to cause the distraction.”

“Whatever it takes,” Mason says.

I want to ask them what they’re talking about, but I’m too tired to even open my mouth.

Raine taps my arm. “Butch is out front. Are you ready?”

Mom grabs my hand. “You’re fine, honey. All of this will be over soon.”
