When I walk off the bus in front of the hotel, I literally run into Evelyn. When I reach out to steady her, she mistakes it as an invitation for a hug. She dives into me.
“Hey! Good game tonight,” she says as I give her an awkward squeeze and then push her back. “Are you headed up to the roof for the party? I’ll ride up on the elevator with you.”
“Uh, yeah.” I look over to Alex. “Is our party on the roof?”
“I don’t think so,” he says, throwing his bag over his shoulder. “Raine said it’s in that swanky private cigar bar.”
“Oh, sorry, Ev. What party’s on the roof?”
Her forehead wrinkles up. “The team party. I didn’t know there was another one. You should go to the team thing.”
“I might stop by before I call it a night,” I say, nodding to Stone and Paul who are walking across the hotel parking lot with their wives. “What’s up, fellas?”
“Good game tonight.” Stone gives me a fist bump. “Manny was throwing bullets. Do you still have use of your hand?”
I hold up my catching hand. “Yeah, but barely. I’m sure I’m going to have a few bruises in the morning. His fast ball was definitely popping.”
“Hey,” Paul says, nodding his head backward. “Our names were on the clearance list, but Ricky’s wasn’t. He’s standing out there with Kaitlyn.”
“And he can continue to stand out there with Kaitlyn.” I motion them toward the lobby. “You can come in or go back out there with him. Your choice.”
“Oh, we’re coming in,” Paul says. “He has to learn that his actions have consequences. You want to let him know or should I?”
“I’m not saying anything to him,” I say, turning toward the lobby. “He can stand out there all night for all I care.”
“Seb,” Evelyn says, pulling on my arm. “Will you sign autographs for me? A few of my clients are in the lobby.”
“Uh, yeah but fast. I want to see Sophie.”
She pulls me over to a few people who are standing by the registration desk. As I sign a few autographs, Millie walks over to us.
“Hey, Millie,” I say. “Is the party started?”
“More than started. It’s at full tilt. You better get back there.” She holds her hand out to Evelyn who’s following me for some reason.
“Hi,” Millie says. “I’m Millie Davis. I’m a friend of Seb’s.”
Evelyn shakes her hand. “You must be new. I’ve been around since Seb was a rookie. I thought I had met all of his friends.”
“Brand new.” Millie smiles. “And who are you?”
“I’m Evelyn. Seb and I have been friends for almost a decade. Right, Seb?”
“Uh, yeah.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Evelyn,” Millie says, linking her arm through mine. “Seb, I’ll show you where our party is.”
“I know where it is,” I say, narrowing my eyebrows as I look down at Millie. She holds my arm tighter when I try to pull it away.
“When should I tell everyone you’ll be at the team party?” Evelyn asks as she glares at Millie.
“He won’t have time to come to that party.” Millie lays her head against my arm. “We’re going to take up all of his time tonight. Bye, Ellen. It was nice meeting you.”
