I slapped the power button off. Could I make one quick call without tipping off the Lonestars? Even if Juliette answered on the first ring and ran every red light, would she make it in time to save Laurent?

There was only one thing I could do.

Emmett scrabbled weakly at my leg as I stood up, shaking his head.

“It’ll be okay,” I lied.

I stepped out of the bushes with my hands up. “Help us. Please.”

An unreadable expression flashed over Ryann’s face before she schooled it into a cold mask. She strode toward me. “Don’t move.”

“Laurent’s dying and Emmett might be too. They’re innocent—” I broke off with a yelp because she’d wrenched my arms behind my back and slapped nulling cuffs on me.

“Miriam Feldman, you’re under arrest for accessory to murder.”

It hadn’t been Dumah or Vincenzo or Kian who’d stolen my second chance. It had been me. Every nerve ending in my body flared as if someone had taken a grinder to the exposed ends and I trembled, my soul ground to dust.

And Sadie? I’d vowed never to abandon my precious girl like my parents had done to me. Yet here I was.

“Do you understand the charges?” Ryann peered into my eyes.

I nodded, tears rolling down my cheeks. “I do and I’ll tell you everything. Just save them.”

“Already on it,” Hawaiian shirt guy said.

I had one final glimpse of Laurent and Emmett being carefully carried out of the bushes, then Ryann dragged me away.
