I lingered after the Lonestar’s departure, wanting a moment alone with my boss. “Will you be paying Laurent to help with this like you did with sending him in?”

“I didn’t pay him squat,” Tatiana said. “He was very determined to go in after you.” Grinning, she nudged me.

I’ll just bet he was, but not for the reasons she thought. His lie about being paid, his pointed comments when we were in the game? He’d intended to confront me about the Ascendant. I rubbed my arms. That bastard.

Laurent had made me feel horrible about keeping mum when he’d known the entire time. Plus, he’d continued to keep his own secrets—even something as small as not correcting my impression that Gabriel was his brother.

I curled my hands into fists, my cheeks flushed. However, there was a silver lining to this. By figuring things out on his own, Laurent had found a loophole. We could have this out without me breaking my promise to Zev.

Tatiana replaced the lid on the cookie tin. “Do you have a plan?”

For destroying the game? Yup. For Laurent? Most definitely.
