Eli didn’t mention it was that skill that landed her here and I didn’t either. She’d dealt with enough.
“Uh, not to be rude, but what are you?” Teresa asked Emmett.
“Golem,” he replied. “Super rare. I’m like the unicorn of the supernatural world.”
“Jesus,” Eli muttered.
“Okay?” Teresa’s brows scrunched together. “It’s Friday, right?” Off our confirmation, her gaze went vacant. “Two days to get to the playground and I don’t know how much farther there is to go. We should be off.”
“It ends at a playground?” Eli helped her to her feet.
“That’s what they said at the starting line.” She tested her weight, hissing as she took a couple of tentative steps.
“Here.” Emmett gave her his cane. “Use this.”
Look at him sharing. My boy was a mensch. I smiled in pride, but quickly lost it because the young woman was still breathing far too shallowly. How long could the human body sustain that level of distress?
My ex picked up Teresa’s pack to carry it for her.
She nodded in thanks at them both. “I don’t remember hearing about it myself, but a couple of the other players said so back at the houses. They promised the winner immortality, but I just want to make it out alive.”
Eli and I exchanged glances. Ian hadn’t known about the “prize” until the end.
“Can you survive the Human Race?” The amiable female’s voice echoed through the trees.
Fingers crossed that we lasted long enough to find out.
