I stood up and kissed Sadie on the top of her head. “I’ll keep you all posted on each step, but now I’m off to bed. Good night, fam.”

“Night,” they chorused.

No wonder so many books and shows featured single people fighting evil. It was much easier to go out there with magic blazing when you only had to think of yourself.

I’d intended to go to bed, but the road to Hell and all that, so I made a quick call.

“Hey, Nav,” I said. “Still want me to take Laurent off your hands?”

He told me that Laurent had gone home. I almost provided an excuse about needing to speak with Laurent about the case, but I didn’t. I had nothing to be embarrassed about.

Thanking him, I hung up, heading directly for my car. Time to go into the forest and visit the big bad wolf.

Low lights gleamed through the dirty frosted windows of Hotel Terminus when I parked at the curb, now a bundle of nerves. I took a moment to fix my hair in the small mirror on the visor, my leg bouncing. What if sex between us was terrible? Like if we couldn’t find our rhythm and just humped limply along, my dry desert Hannukah bush failing to become a lush wet oasis? What if he was a two-minute wonder and I had to fake my enthusiasm?

What if I gave him carpal tunnel from trying to get me off for too long?

Argh! I wrenched the key out of the ignition, slammed the door, and marched up to the side door, rapping on it briskly.

“Attends,” Laurent called from inside. A moment later a bolt clicked free. He slouched against the door jamb, clad only in jeans, his dark curls messed up like he’d run a hand through them. “Come for another run?”

I shook my head.

He raked a very slow gaze over me and I gave a giddy little bounce.

“Hmmm.” His brow furrowed. “To discuss a case?” He scratched his chest, those strong fingers rasping over the dusting of hair on his sculpted pecs.

I bit my bottom lip. “Nope.”

He tilted his head, one eyebrow quirked. “Are you here to fix our technical oversight and fuck?”

I curled a strand of hair around my finger, my body lit up with nerves and anticipation. “What if I was?”
