She nodded. “My mom had to give up her dream of being a ballerina. Luckily, I loved ballet as much as she did, and her dream became mine.”

Giselle sounded pleased that everything had worked out so well, but frankly, that sounded like a nightmare more than a dream. Any parent living vicariously through a child put a ton of pressure on them, especially in fields where parents became rabid in hopes of having their kid make it big. I wasn’t about to insult Giselle’s mother, however, so I smiled politely.

“Are you ready to order?” Our male server placed a gin and tonic in front of Tatiana and a white wine in front of Giselle.

I hadn’t picked up the handwritten menu yet, but Tatiana ordered the salmon with a side salad. Giselle decided she’d have the same, while I hastily scanned the daily specials for something healthy as well.

“I’ll have the steak in the butter sauce, medium-well, the pommes frites, and a salad,”

I said. “Oil and vinegar on the side.” There. No heavy dressing for me. Pleased, I handed the server my menu.

“And to drink?” He poured me ice water out of a large glass carafe.

I opened my mouth to say I was fine with the water, but only a strangled croak came out as I gawked at the couple who’d just entered.
