He made a face like a cat hacking up a hairball when he tried the chicken, then he fluttered his wings wildly and pounded a fist on the table.

“Do you like it or not?” I said.

“Is terrible! But now I can say ‘tastes like chicken’!”

The cornbread was more of a hit so I left him happily munching on that as I marched through the gloomy KH and out the door into my home.

I longed to hide under the covers. I couldn’t fix this situation, only figure out what the least shitty option was. What side should take precedence here? Respecting my client’s wishes that I leave this alone? Killing Edvin despite the cost to the twins to keep him from doing this to anyone else? Killing Edvin to keep him from coming after Sadie?

If Giselle didn’t want me to move forward with this, did I even have that right? And how could I subject Sadie to danger when I was doing it against the wishes of one of the main parties involved?

Would I be better off working for an organization like Carpe Demon if that was an option rather than for Tatiana? People whose morals, for the most part, aligned with mine? At least that bunch was fighting on behalf of humanity. Tatiana was in it for a paycheck, morals be damned.

Would my choices be easier to make if I had a calling like Nav with demons or Laurent with dybbuks?

My turbulent thoughts were interrupted by a notification from Emmett that Tatiana’s flight had been delayed until tomorrow.

At least I could put off seeing my employer’s smirk when she heard about the outcome of the case. Determined that this day not be a total bust, I called the Bear’s Den, relieved that Harry was back.

The gargoyle had never heard of the Ascendant, and his first suggestion was to ask Tatiana. At this point, I would have, were I not facing a smug “I told you so” from her because of our case. Unfortunately, his second suggestion was to go see Poe. That was out for obvious reasons, and I hung up, feeling dejected.

Then I got to thinking. The danger with raven shifters was in playing games that would give them information they then manifested into reality. Was there some way to engage with Poe to extract facts, neutral information, without any games involved? After all, they owed me for sending me off in the Succubus, knowing I could have been killed.

My determination hardened. Poe was going to pay up—or else.
