“Don’t be so melodramatic.” Said the undead being who’d recently munched on Achilles’ tendon. “Your soul is hardly that valuable.”

My stomach dropped into my toes. Then what was?

He pressed the vial into my hand. “Tatiana’s life depends on your success. Don’t make any rash decisions out of a misguided loyalty.”

I shoved it in my purse. “What about my ward? When will you set it up?”

“Tomorrow night.” Zev crossed the room and knelt by the fallen vamp, his head cocked.

The fiend spoke, but his face was too mushed up for anything other than garbled sound.

“Shame,” Zev said, and snapped the dude’s neck.

“Wh-why didn’t you let him regenerate?”

“Some things are beyond repair.” He nodded at the door. “That will be all, Ms. Feldman.”

Bile rising in my throat, I bobbed a hasty bow and fled into the night.
