His spine was burned out.

A two-hundred-pound blur of white slammed into me, knocking me onto my stomach. A rush of adrenaline flooded me, my mouth dry. I processed it was Laurent as his claws flexed against my spine, and I mewled, anticipating the same end as the guard.

The door bashed open off its hinges, whizzing so close overhead that it ruffled my hair as it passed. It shattered against the concrete wall, one edge of it blackened and smoking.

“Oh God, Jude!” I gasped, trying to get out from under the wolf, and save my friend from whatever had killed the guard and blown the door off.

A shadow fell over us and Laurent leapt off me, his ears forward and his fur bristled. Growling, he pushed his snout up, exposing his gums and front teeth.

A woman in a blood-spattered tennis outfit wrapped a strand of hair around her finger, her crimson-flecked sickly shadow really bringing out her highlights.

“Welcome to the party,” Mei Lin said, and fired two hard light beams from her eyes.
