“As you advertised on your shirt, the first time we met.” I batted my lashes at him. “Got a particular kink, do you?”

“Remember when you didn’t speak for an entire minute? A precious memory.”

“Ha. Ha.” I busied myself putting on the helmet, then stopped, turning stricken eyes to his. “Do you think Jude was taken because she pulled off divination and these dybbuks want a golem like Emmett or because they intend to stop her?”

“Probably the former, and it’s dybbuk singular. Only the leader is possessed. The others are regular criminals with magic. The dybbuk-possessed don’t play well together.”

“So where is this gang now?”

“Harry didn’t know, which means a visit to the bloodsuckers, which I was hoping to avoid.”

“Maybe Jude’s vampire employers have rescued her already,” I said.

He strapped on his helmet. “They can’t. Harry heard the dybbuk outfitted the new place with a bunker running off its own generator, and every inch is lit with full spectrum bulbs.”

“Sunlight bulbs.” I clicked the helmet straps into place. “Kind of genius. Good thing we won’t have that problem.” I inadvertently glanced at where Laurent’s scar was. He’d survived at least one encounter with the head vamp, but at what cost? Would this push Laurent to more of a breaking point? He was already someone anxious to be broken, but voicing my concern might accelerate his actions, so I forced a note of bravado into my voice. “Blood Alley, here we come.”
