“That’s right,” I said. “If you let him go home now, then next time you and he can visit Boo and you can show him how to play with the cat. Would you like that?”

She nodded and toddled over to Emmett, trying to push him onto the floor. “Get off my chair, baby. Go to sleep.”

Emmett heaved a world-weary sigh.

Laurent deigned to lend a hand this time, helping the golem up.

“Bye, Evani,” Laurent said.

She wrinkled her nose at him. “I want crackers.” She opened a tall cupboard and pulled out a rolling shelf with snacks on it.

Nav remained by the open back door.

“Thank you for helping us,” I said.

He looked away.

I scrubbed a hand over my face, suppressing a sigh, and stepped onto the porch.

Laurent shook his head at his friend. “I’ll call you later.”

Nav didn’t thaw out to Laurent, but Emmett got a genuine smile. “You were very patient with Evani. I appreciate it.”

“She’s a good kid,” Emmett said gruffly, and hopped his way to the car. He wasn’t thrilled to go back into the trunk, but one look at my face and he climbed in without further protest. Smart golem.
