“Let go of me,” Jada cried.
Shit. Another man must have come in through the French doors and gotten ahold of Jada. Just how many were there?
Gideon didn’t take his eyes off the tableau in front of him, even as he heard the crackle of electricity and a thud.
“I’ve got her. The bastard killed Ronnie and Jim,” the man called from Gideon’s bedroom.
Gideon never felt so helpless in his life.
“When the boss gets ahold of him, he’ll regret that and every other moment of his life.”
No wonder they were using tasers, they wanted him alive. Neil’s cries sounded wretched.
“You’re holding him too tight,” Gideon said to the man holding Neil.
“Shut up,” he replied.
“You want to live, and you want to take me alive, but that won’t be possible unless I know the baby won’t come to any harm,” Gideon threatened.
The man holding Neil darted his eyes to the man beside him.
Jesus, Gideon saw yet another shadow at the mouth of the hallway in the great room. That meant at least four, and probably one in a van outside. He needed to stall. The alarm went to the local sheriff’s and to Kostya and to Nolan since he lived the closest.
Gideon took a step to the side, still in a bit of a crouch, so that his back was against the wall. He was still within reach of his gun. He had eyes on little Neil, but could see the behemoth behind him with Jada over his shoulder.
“Quit moving,” the injured man snarled.
“We’re at an impasse,” Gideon said.
The man holding Neil chortled. “How do you figure that?”
“My neighbor is armed to the teeth. He’ll have heard the shots. My silent alarm didn’t go to just the sheriff, it went to my SEAL teammates and they’ll be here in minutes.”
“Fuck,” the man behind him muttered.
“I’ll go quietly if you put Neil back in his crib and we all walk out of here together.”
“Do it quick, Ketterman,” the man behind him said. “He’s already killed two of our guys.”
“Kick your gun to me,” the injured man said.
Gideon didn’t have a choice. He did it.
The man holding Neil lowered the stunner and went into the spare bedroom with a whimpering Neil.
When he rushed back out, Gideon could still hear his Godson’s mewls over the baby monitor, and his knees sagged with relief.
“Get moving,” the man from behind shouted. “To the front door. Fast.”
Gideon started down the hallway. The man who had held Neil had backed into the room so that he could follow Gideon as he passed by. Now Gideon had two men at his back and two men in front of him as they marched him out his front door. Jada was helpless.
The only.
Only.
Saving grace out of anything, was that she had put on his tee and panties after sex, and he’d put on a pair of workout pants because they might have to check on the baby during the night.
Outside in his drive, he was surprised to see a Mercedes Sprinter instead of the expected white windowless van. That was his last thought as he was stunned into unconsciousness.
