“As soon as Gideon comes back from work, I’m going to take his Range Rover and come over to your house and sort this shit out. There is something smelly in Denmark, and I’m going to figure it out.”

“No!” Gianna cried. “You are not interfering in my marriage.”

“Well, someone’s got to since you’re not doing it. I swear to God, Gianna, he loves you. He worships you. There is nothing wrong.”

“Yes, there is!” Gianna wailed. “My husband hates me!”

“Gianna, what’s wrong?”

Jada heard Sebastian’s worried voice over the phone.

“Nothing you’d care about,” was Gianna’s petulant reply.

“What are you talking about? I care about anything that has to do with you.” Sebastian sounded distraught.

Good.

“No, you don’t. You don’t care about me. You hate me. Admit it.”

As much as Jada wanted to know how this was going to play out, she didn’t feel comfortable listening in to her friend’s conversation, so she ended the call. She’d wait for Gianna to tell her what happened, and she prayed she’d have to wait until tomorrow because they’d take all night to make up.

Jada put her phone and iPad down on the coffee table then uncurled from the couch and got up to go to the kitchen. Lucy perked up from her doggie bed. “You want a treat?”

That got the big dog bounding off the bed and skidding along the wood floor to meet Jada in the kitchen.

“Thought so,” Jada smirked. “Tell you what. We can both have treats, how about that?”

Jada got out the fixings for a bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich, and Lucy woofed as soon as she smelled the bacon. “I told you, we’re going to eat together, like a family, so you just set your ass down near the couch, and I’ll bring your treat when I bring my food.Comprender?”

Lucy wagged her tail so hard, most of her body shook and Jada laughed. She pointed to the couch and Lucy immediately trotted toward Jada’s place in the corner. Jada finished making her sandwich and grabbed a small bottle of Sprite out of the fridge. She cut her sandwich, smothered it with potato chips, and threw three additional slices of bacon on top of the chips. Hopefully, Gideon wouldn’t notice all the bacon she’d pilfered from his fridge.

Jada went and curled up on the sofa, balancing her plate on top of a paper towel on her crossed legs.

“Aren’t you a good girl, waiting so patiently.”

Lucy lifted her head and gave Jada her best pathetic look.

“Don’t lie to me, you had plenty of food in your food bowl. I know because I saw how full it was this morning.”

Woof, woof.

“Sure. That’s what you say now. But what’s your story going to be when Gideon gets home?” Jada loved having these nonsensical conversations with the big dog. She was such a love.

She held out a piece of bacon, and Lucy delicately nipped it away from her fingers, careful not to touch Jada with her massive teeth.

“You’re such a good girl,” Jada crooned. Jada started in on her potato chips, then wiped her fingers off on the paper towel before she picked up the older laptop that she’d used to infiltrate Risk Guard. She’d checked out Gideon’s internet connection, and it was tight. Very few people would be able to track down his IP address.Very few.But that didn’t mean it was perfect.

It took a whole sandwich and one and a half more pieces of bacon for Lucy until Jada was satisfied that she had rerouted everything.

“Who’s my good girl? Here you go,” Jada held out the last half-piece of bacon, but Lucy shot up off the floor and raced toward the mudroom instead. Jada gave a forlorn sigh. “I hear you, girl. I would pass up bacon for Gideon any day of the week.”

Don’t go there. That ship has sailed.

Jada set her computer on the coffee table, then headed to the kitchen with her plate so she could put it in the dishwasher. She hated leaving any kind of mess for the Chief. It was fun calling him that—she’d heard some of his teammates call him Chief and she knew it made him uncomfortable when she did, which only made it more fun. She had to do something to make the situation lighter, since she knew she was stuck in Virginia for a while. The game plan had been for her to eventually go and stay with Gianna and Sebastian, but after the call she was just on with Gianna, that didn’t look too promising.

She sighed again.

Jada looked up from the kitchen counter when she heard Lucy’s loud barking outside.
