“Come on, ladies, let’s get you inside. One of you needs to get a little food and then take a nap.” Lucy’s head whipped around, and Gideon stifled a groan. It sucked having a dog who knew so many words. As soon as he mentioned food, Lucy was all over it.
“I’m not very hungry,” Jada protested.
“Maybe a little something to go with the meds, even if it’s just some crackers. What do you say?”
“I say you’re probably right.”
“I’ll get the bags as soon as you’re seated and eating. Then I’ll set you up in the guest room. Sound good?”
Lucy took that moment to butt her head against Jada’s leg, wanting another scratch. Jada laughed. “Yeah, that sounds good.”
As soon as they got into the great room, Jada stopped and stared. “Just how much space does one man need?”
“I bought it as an investment. But it’s turned out pretty nice for my brother and his boys to come over on the weekends.”
“I’ll say, they must love it here.”
“They do,” Gideon admitted. He guided her to the couch. “Do you need the bathroom before I insist you sit down and I get you something to eat?”
Jada shook her head.
“Okay, why don’t you have a seat here, and I’ll bring you a little something to eat? What would you like to drink?”
“Do you have something with bubbles? Like club soda?”
“I think I can rustle something up.”
Lucy plunked down at Jada’s feet. “I think somebody has decided to watch over you.”
Jada gave a wan grin, which told Gideon to move his ass and get her ibuprofen and food. When he looked in his fridge, he found some cheese, and a cantaloupe that still looked good. He quickly sliced them both up, added that and some crackers to a plate, along with some pills and a glass of club soda, and took it all out to Jada. He quickly noted that Lucy was now sitting on Jada’s feet.
“Off,” he commanded.
Lucy gave him a sorrowful look, but she hoisted herself off Jada’s feet and shuffled a step away before plopping down again.
“I think you’ve made a friend.” Gideon smiled as he set the plate down on a side table next to the couch.
“I adore her. That’s one of the things I regret about my apartment, no pets.”
“Hold out your hand,” Gideon said. He deposited the pills in her outstretched hand and watched as she swallowed them down with her drink. “You should be feeling better soon. Now, are you willing to tell me how bad your pain is?”
“No,” she gave him a wry grin. “You’d just hover more.”
She had him there.
“Is there anything else you need?”
“Yes, my iPad.” Jada’s tone was melancholy. “I feel like I’m missing a limb.”
“You have your phone,” he tried to placate.
She shot him a look of disgust. “Yeah, yeah, I know you’re right, but it still stings not having it.”
“I can get an iPad here for you by tomorrow. That way we can download everything from your iCloud account and you’ll be back in business.”
She sighed. “Not everything.”
“Time to ’fess up. What else have you got on Risk Guard? You’re checking them out on a whole different system and account, aren’t you?”
