He laughed with relief. “That’s not my style, Angel. I’m totally chill.”
She snorted.
He ran his index finger along her nose, then gave her a swift kiss.
“I love you, Angel.”
Then he got out of the SUV and headed for the house.
* * *
When he gotto the top of the stairs, he wasn’t surprised to see Kostya gone. He’d be trying to get into the room from one of the back windows. Ryker would be getting one of the rifles they had stashed in the SUV and seeing if he could line up a shot. There were options, there were always options.
Simon nodded at him.
Nolan thumped his back.
Gideon stood by the side of the door and then knocked on it so he could avoid any gunshot blasts.
“Oh, for God’s sake, Gideon. I told you, we’re going to die together. I’m not shooting you through the door. Now come on in, it’s unlocked,” Kendall said loudly enough for them all to hear.
He screwed up; he should have taken the comm system out of the SUV so Jada couldn’t hear what they’d say.
Enough of that, Smith, it’s game time.
Gideon opened the door and let himself in.
The girl was lying in a heap on the floor in front of the bed. Kendall was sitting above her, his gun trained on Gideon.
“Honey, can you stand up?” Gideon asked.
She raised her head and looked at him through glassy eyes.
“Rhoda, can you get up and walk out of the room?”
“He has a gun,” she whimpered.
“So do I.” Gideon motioned with his. “See? Now get up and leave.”
She pushed herself up slowly off the rug and looked back at Kendall. He grabbed her arm and put the gun to her temple. “Hold up, Rhoda. Gideon, throw your gun out into the hall, then close the door. I’m sick of seeing your little army friends.”
Gideon did as he was told.
“Now, Rhoda, walk toward the door, and Gideon, you walk toward me. Rhoda, you can’t open the door until Gideon is kneeling in front of me, do you understand?”
“Yes, Sir.”
Kendall looked like shit and his hand was trembling holding the Glock. The idiot should be using two hands. He was wearing a short-sleeved shirt and the man had no muscle tone. If it weren’t for the fact that this guy had outmaneuvered him fourteen ways from Sunday, this should be an easy takedown.
Gideon took his time walking over to Kendall, wanting as much time as possible to scrutinize his opponent. He gave Rhoda a reassuring smile as she came close to him and was beginning to pass him.
“Oh, God,” was all she said before she fell on him. Gideon still had all of his focus on Kendall, even as Kendall’s strayed to the maid. Gideon pulled Ryker’s gun from behind his back and pointed it at Kendall.
“Drop your weapon,” Gideon yelled at the man.
Kendall’s gun was about ready to fall out of his fingertips as it was.
“Drop it!” Gideon repeated himself.
“My nemesis,” Kendall said as he worked to raise the gun.
Dammit, hewantedGideon to kill him.
In the second before he had to pull the trigger, so many thoughts floated through Gideon’s head. Gideon had his gun pointed at Kendall’s hand, then lifted the barrel and took the headshot.
