I hate this.
“Need help, grandpa?”
“Fuck you, Ryker.” Gideon chuckled and finished dressing. “How’s Jada?”
“Antsy. Hurting. Once again she’s against the pain meds, but I think Lark has her turned around on that. She actually got Amy on speaker phone. The two of them wore Jada down. It was funnier than fuck.” Ryker grimaced, instead of smiling.
Gideon wondered at his expression, then remembered that Ryker was still hung up on Amy. Gideon felt like a shitty friend for not finding out how things had been going between the two of them, but in all honesty, he’d had a lot on his plate.
“Got your cell phone with you? I need to talk to Kane and the others.”
“Your geek squad?” Ryker asked.
“Yeah,” Gideon reluctantly agreed to the crap name.
“Wait ’til I’ve got you in my Riviera.”
“Are you telling me I don’t get to ride bitch on your Harley? I’m hurt.”
“If I had the Harley, I would have had you continue to wear your hospital gown so your ass would be showing,” Ryker smirked. “Now enough with the chitter-chatter and plant your ass into the wheelchair.”
Gideon sat down in the chair, and Ryker had them down the hall and at the banks of elevators in no time.
“Give me your cell phone,” Gideon demanded again.
This time Ryker handed it over. Gideon dialed Kane’s number from memory.
“Ryker? How’s Gideon?” Kane asked. Ryker shoved the chair into the elevator.
“It’s Gideon. In elevator. Going to lose you. Stay put.” Gideon hung up and waited for them to get into the hospital lobby, then called Kane again.
“Thought you needed another day in the hospital,” Kane commented.
“Yeah, well, you thought wrong. I’m headed to Jada. Need you to gather the team. Here’s what’s going on. Miles Albright is really a man named Kendall Douglas. Douglas used to head a gaming company in San Fran, called Streetgamezzz. He went to prison. When he got out, he had plastic surgery, killed Miles, and took over his identity a few years back.”
“Jesus, is this for real?” Kane asked.
“Yep.”
“Sounds like a James Bond movie.”
“Yep. Especially when I tell you he considers me his arch nemesis and he went after Jada so he could hurt me. I was the one who sent him to prison.”
“Motherfucker.”
“He’s out there, and he’s plotting something. He said it would make him on par with Bezos and Musk. We’ve got a hell of a problem on our hands. I’m woozy, and I can’t figure it out. We need everyone working on this.” He glanced up at Ryker who was looking at him wide-eyed. “I should be with Jada in?” Ryker didn’t respond.
“Ryker,” Gideon said sharply. “How long to get to Jada?”
“Forty minutes, but I can make it in half that time.”
“I’ll call back in twenty minutes,” Gideon told Kane.
“I’m bringing Rylie into this,” Kane muttered.
“Huh?” Gideon asked. He didn’t know anyone named Rylie. “I’m not willing to trust some guy named Rylie.”
“Rylie is a woman, and she’s married to Dare Stanton on the Midnight Delta team. Trust me, we want her.”
“Okay. Get them all together in twenty.” He hung up the phone as Ryker parked the wheelchair at the lobby door.
“Are you good enough to walk to my car?” Ryker asked.
“Damn right I am.”
“Good enough.”
