Chirp.Chirp. Chirp.

It was his home alarm system ringtone on his cell phone. He snagged Jada around the waist and rolled so that they fell onto the floor beside his side of the bed, her small body landing on top of his.

“What? Gid—”

“Shhh,” he hissed, while reaching up to his nightstand and pulling out his pistol. “Get under the bed.”

“Neil—”

“Now, Jada.” He shoved her and as she started to squirm under the bed. He pounced into a crouch and turned toward the French door that led to his patio.

Woof. Woof. Woof.

Someone was coming in through the front of the house.

Glass pelted the floor as someone reached in one of the French doors to open it from the inside.

This isn’t a quiet intrusion, this was a blitzkrieg!

Gideon shot at the figure who was trying to break in. It was a headshot, and he went down. This time he heard a loud noise from the great room and turned his head when the French doors crashed open.

Another intruder!

Woof. Woof. Woof.

Lucy was going crazy. Gideon could hear the snarls, punctuated by Neil’s cries through the baby monitor.

“Neil!” Jada shouted.

Gideon got off another two shots. One was a kill shot.

Woof. Woof. Woof.

“Stay put!” Gideon shouted when he saw Jada squirming out from underneath the bed. He leapt over the bed, intent on getting down the hall to Neil.

“Fucking dog!” somebody yelled.

More snarls.

Woof. Woof.

Neil was past the point of crying—he was screaming.

Woof.

Lucy howled, then whined, then nothing.

“I’ve got the brat, drop the gun.”

Gideon stood at the mouth of his bedroom door and stared at two men dressed all in black. One had tiny Neil crushed to his chest with one arm. He held a cattle prod against the baby.

“Drop the gun, or it dies.”

Even with Neil’s screams, he could hear Jada’s gasp and knew she was coming out from under the bed.

Lucy must have been stunned, that’s why she wasn’t barking. He saw blood dripping from the guy on the left. His thigh looked torn to shit where his pants were ripped. If Gideon took the shots, there was too much of a chance that Neil would be stunned, and there was no way an eighteen-pound baby would survive a jolt of electricity.

Gideon slowly crouched down, then lowered his Sig Sauer onto the floor, but stayed with his knees bent so he could still get to it quickly.
