Jada and Gideon waited for three-and-a-half minutes as another disgruntled couple was forced to leave the bed and breakfast. It took another minute to watch them get in their BMW and drive away. At least these people took their luggage.
“We’re clear,” Simon said.
The parking lot was almost empty, except for the little Honda with the young woman sitting in it.
And a garish yellow Ferrari, which Jada would bet belonged to Kendall Douglas.
“I think we may have a problem,” Jada said as she tipped her chin toward the Honda. “Why is she still here?”
She watched as Gideon rubbed the top of his head. “It’s going to go over better if a woman goes up to her car than a man. Can you go and find out?” he asked.
“You got it.”
As she exited the SUV, Jada heard Gideon telling the men to hold on before they made their move on Kendall. When she got up to the car, the girl was already rolling down her window.
“Who are you?” she asked. She seemed shaky, and who wouldn’t be after seeing everybody scurry out of the hotel? “Are you with that guy who told me that there was going to be a raid and I needed to leave?”
“Yeah,” Jada said. But how the girl could have thought that was true as Jada was prancing around in high heels was beyond her. “Why didn’t you leave?”
“I’m waiting for my friend. I work in the kitchen. She does the cleaning, but she’s been cleaning the upstairs a long time. She should have come out by now, don’t you think? Shouldn’t your people have told her about the raid?”
“What’s your name?” Jada smiled.
“Heidi.”
“Heidi, what’s your friend’s name?”
“Rhoda.”
“What time does Rhoda usually finish the upstairs?”
“She usually finishes almost two hours ago. Somebody must have really made a mess. That happens sometimes. But still, I woulda thought that big guy woulda sent her outside already.”
“Heidi, do you see those two SUVs parked over there?” Jada pointed.
Heidi nodded.
“We’re going to drive Rhoda home when the raid is over with.”
Heidi gave a relieved grin. “That’d be great.” She rolled up her window and started her car. Jada stared at her in amazement. Was she really going to just abandon her friend so easily? But then she rolled down her window again.
“Hey.” Heidi waved at her, even though Jada hadn’t moved.
“Yeah?”
“Is this about the old creepy guy in the manor suite?”
“Why do you ask?” Jada asked.
“I don’t know. He’s just creepy is all.”
“Yeah, it’s about him.”
Heidi’s brow furrowed, then her face cleared and she smiled. “Okay. Thanks for taking Rhoda home.” She rolled up her window and backed out of her space and sped out of the parking lot.
Jada raced over to Gideon.
We have a problem.
