“Ice cold,” he agreed. The way she melted into him warmed his heart.
My heart?
He suppressed a sigh. Of course his heart. Where else had this been heading?
“Lie back,Sólnce.”
“Solncè?” she repeated back to him, butchering the pronunciation. “What does that mean?”
“Little Sun.” Lark gave him a quizzical look and he shrugged. “What can I say, I told you the thought of you keeps me warm.”
She snuggled closer and Kostya tightened his hold.
“Sometimes the Russian in you really comes out. How old were you when you left?”
“Seven.”
Lark leaned her head against his shoulder and looked up at him, her blue eyes cobalt. “So your parents got you out before the fall of the Soviet Union?”
She looked beautiful in his arms, her face lit by the moonlight coming in from the window. The idea of sharing the good and bad memories of his childhood with this woman didn’t bring about the ache that he would have expected. Still, now wasn’t the time, or the place.
Kostya reached up and brushed his thumb along her bottom lip. Her tongue peeked out and licked it. “My God, Lark, what you do to me.”
She gave him a sultry smile. “I hope it’s good, whatever it is.”
“It is,” he assured her. He adjusted her on his lap so that she straddled him. “I tell you what, let’s save our childhood stories for some other time, all right?”
She looked down at where their lower bodies were connected, then looked back up at his face. She licked her lips and slowly smiled. “I can get on board with that.”
Sifting his fingers through her silky hair, he cupped the back of her skull and guided her head down toward him, intently watching her lips as they parted right before they met his.
A pleasure unlike any he had ever felt before burst across his senses. The taste of Lark was sublime, honey and peaches and kindness and warmth slid across his tongue. Kostya closed his eyes, trying to bask in this moment of homecoming, because that is what it was. Every fiber of his being clamored for him to wrap his arms around her, tether her against him and never let her go. She was it. He knew she was it. But she wasn’t ready for this….for everything. He needed to take it slow.
As if she could feel his inner turmoil, she pulled away.
“Kostya?”
“I’m here, Baby.”
She gave him a considering look and twined her arms around his neck. “You okay?” she asked.
“Oh yeah.”
“Good,” she drawled.
Lark tilted her head sideways and pressed her wet lips against his with a low hum. He felt her shudder and he thrust his tongue deep inside the recesses of her mouth. He plundered, needing to imprint her with everything he was, doing his best not to scare her. But his woman wasn’t scared, no, not Lark Sorensen. She ground herself against his pulsing erection. He shot up off the chair, carrying her with him.
Lark sighed his name as she wrapped her legs around his waist and tightened her arms around his neck. He strode across her suite and shouldered opened the door to the bedroom, barely taking the time to admire the king-sized bed before easing her on top of the duvet. Lark whimpered when he began to unwind her limbs from his body.
“Don’t go,” she pleaded.
He pushed back the hair from her face and kissed her forehead.
“Not even the hounds of hell could force me away from you,sólnce.”
His inclination was to kneel above her and begin the tantalizing journey of sliding up her dress, but he knew that big men made her uneasy. Lark wouldn’t be comfortable having him loom over her, so Kostya slid down on the bed beside her and reached over to turn on the bedside lamp. She blinked twice, then smiled as her eyes adjusted.
“This time I’m definitely seeing a tangle of sheets in our future,” she teased him, harking back to her words from their time in the Washington D.C. bar.
