She whimpered and clamped her lips shut.

“That’s better.”

He settled back in his seat but kept the knife held loosely in his hand as it rested on his lap. Lark tried to ignore it as she stared out the window. They weren’t taking her into the city, they were going along the coast. She prayed they would be driving for a long time. Wouldn’t that give Kostya more time to rescue her? Isn’t that what Prince Charming did? Rescue people?

She couldn’t say how long they’d been driving when the vehicle pulled off the road and parked near some kind of storage facility. She saw trees. Lots of trees. Was that a gate? Lark looked down and saw that her jeans were soaked with blood, so they must have driven a long time for that cut to have bled that much. She frowned when she realized how disjointed her thinking was.

“I said get out!”

She looked up and realized all four doors were open and all of the men were out of the SUV. The man who had cut her grabbed her injured arm and yanked her out of the car. Her screams echoed into nothingness. Was it nothing?

“She’s going to pass out. How badly did you cut her? We need her awake to question her.”

The man holding her started yelling back in Arabic and darkness swirled around her head just before Lark slumped to the ground.
