She checked her phone, but neither Kostya, Gideon, or Ryker had responded back to her, and she was too freaked out to think about them showering together. She’d never really considered the fact that Kostya would have another gun, or guns, around his house. She’d only seen him with the one that he always wore and took to work.

But first things first. She needed to fill him in, which meant leaving a voicemail.

She called his phone again, hoping he might actually answer, but no such luck. After she heard the beep she left the best, most coherent message she could.

“Kostya, long, complicated message ahead, so keep up. Candy called from Florida. The bad guys who killed Rick got to her, tortured her, then killed Dawn. This was on Saturday. She tried to keep them from killing Dawn by saying I knew something, so she gave them my name. There were four of them, and she thinks they were Arabs. I’m thinking they’re probably part of a terrorist group that wants a code from the Missile Defense Agency. Couldn’t get ahold of you, Ryker, or Gideon, so I called Trevor. He went batshit crazy and told me to find a gun of yours and leave. That’s what I’m going to do. Call me and I’ll tell you where I ended up.”

Lark sucked in a deep breath and started to hit the ‘end’ button.

Then stopped.

“Dammit.”

“Kostya, I wanted to do so much better than this. I wanted to do a dress with fuck-me heels and everything. I will too.” She looked up at the ceiling, noticing the stainless steel ceiling fan for the first time.

“Kostya? Everything’s going to be fine. Trevor’s just acting like an old lady. But still. I’m so sorry I haven’t said this before now. I love you,” she said softly. “I believe in fairy tales now. I believe that you’re my Prince Charming.” She scrubbed away a tear and cleared her throat. “Okay, next time there will be a short dress and fuck-me heels.”

She hung up. Now to find a gun. She needed to think about this calmly. Her man would definitely be responsible about this.

He’d have a gun safe!

She twirled around the living room, her eyes taking in everything. Nothing stood out.

Where?

She went back to their bedroom. She narrowed her eyes at the doorway and scoped out the entire room. He’d want it close to him. He always had his Sig Sauer in the nightstand near the condoms. The man had his priorities.

Quit with the naughty thoughts and think!

Wait a minute! She rushed over to the closet and pushed back the clothes on hangars near the back of his side of the closet. There it was. A huge safe. It took her a moment to figure out that it opened with some kind of finger or thumbprint.

“Fuck me!” she yelled and spun away.

“Next. What’s next. Goddamned Trevor.” She checked her phone again. Nothing from the guys, and here she was all in a tither because the old man at the FBI has his panties in a twist!

She stomped back to the living room.

I need a drink.

Lark looked over to the cabinet above the fridge, then grimaced in disgust. Okay, there was only one vehicle and that was the Bronco which Kostya took to base. She went back to the kitchen counter and called up her Uber app. She tapped in her address and scheduled her ride.

“I’m pissed at you, old man,” she growled as she thought about Trevor. She started to load up her computer bag.

“Dammit!” She gritted her teeth when pencil shavings spilled all over the table and the floor. It never occurred to her to leave the mess, or to leave without her pencil sharpener.

Fine, I have a little bit of OCD, sue me.

She looked at the clock on her phone. It was still going to take another fifteen minutes before the Uber got here, not that it mattered. Trevor was out of his mind. But if he was this over the top, she shuddered to think what Kostya would be like, so she figured leaving was probably a good idea.

She went to the laundry room and grabbed the vacuum cleaner. She came back and vacuumed up the pencil shavings. She straightened up the table, made sure she had everything she needed in her bag, and that the top on her pencil sharpener was closed tight. Then she put that in the bag as well.

“Looking good.”

Her phone buzzed. “Finally,” she grinned.

Her shoulders slumped when she realized it was just the Uber driver outside, and not Kostya or one of the others. She hustled up and took the vacuum back to the laundry room, grabbed a coat, her purse, and the computer bag, then left the house and locked the door.
