Lark lookedup from the hotel desk when she heard the room door open.
Kostya frowned when he saw her sitting at the desk. “You know, as soon as you got up, you should have put on the security lock.”
“That’s a McDonald’s bag!” Lark shouted in delight as she shot up from the desk, pulling down the t-shirt she’d stolen out of his duffle bag so it would cover her panties.
“Did you hear me about the locks?” Kostya asked as she grabbed the bag out of his hand.
“Sure, sure. What did you get me?” she asked as she headed back to the desk.
“Look inside. I might not have gotten you a sausage McMuffin and hashbrowns.”
Lark started to pull out the contents of the bag onto the desk, but Kostya stopped her. “Easy there, champ, show a tiny bit of decorum.” Kostya laughed as he snatched the bag from her greedy hands, went over to the dining room table, and took out three breakfast sandwiches.
After Lark plopped her panty-covered ass onto one of the dining room chairs, he handed her one of the sandwiches.
“Here’s yours.”
“You’re having two?” she asked as she unwrapped her sausage McMuffin and bit into it.
“Three. Already ate one on the way back to the hotel. After all the calories we burned last night, I was hungry.”
Lark finished her bite and frowned at him. “Hey, I burned just as many calories as you did, why did I only get one McMuffin?”
He handed her a packet with hashbrowns and she grinned. “That’s more like it,” but then she grabbed the bag to look inside. She grinned when she pulled out a packet of ketchup. “You know, if there hadn’t been ketchup, you would have failed.”
“So I was told.”
“Dammit, who is your source?” If she wasn’t sittingandbarefootandbarely dressed, she would have stomped her foot.
“A good operative never reveals his source.” Lark looked down and realized he had already eaten one entire sandwich and was working his way through the second. She drank some of the orange juice he had brought.
“I’m going to figure out who your source is. You know that, right?”
“It would be pretty pathetic if you didn’t. After all, youarean investigative journalist.”
God, he looks smug.
God, he looks good when he looked smug.
Lark savagely took another bite of her sandwich.
Kostya laughed.
Great, now he was a mind reader.
“So what are you working on? Why do you think men from Sanofi are brokering trade secrets?”
“I’ll tell you why.”
Lark got up from the table, still holding onto her sandwich, and went to her desk. She pushed around papers until she found the half-filled notepad. She came back to the table, chewing and perusing her notes.
“Damn,” she muttered when she knocked into the table with her hip as she went to sit down. Kostya caught their coffees before they spilled, then pulled the McMuffin out of her hand and traded it with her coffee. She took a sip, then set it down as she flipped through the pages. Some of the notes were months old; this was the notebook she’d started writing in when she first had a glimmer about this story.
“Are you going to talk to me?” Kostya asked.
“Hmmm?” Lark flipped another page.
