Kostya shook his head. “I don’t want to know, do I?”

She looked up at him. “Nope, you don’t.” She took a step backward and he got a chance to take in what she was wearing.

Holy hell.

Red was definitely her color. As a matter of fact, she should never wear anything but red ever again.

“You look beautiful.”

She bit her lip. Her lip which was coated with fire engine red lip gloss.

“Thanks,” she beamed. “Hold on a second and I’ll get my coat. Do you want to come in?”

“Yes. But I’ll stay out here.”

She gave him a confused frown, but said, “Okay.”

He kept his foot in the door, keeping it open, and she quickly came back holding her clutch and coat. “This is a little bit of déjà vu.”

“I was thinking the same thing.”

“I probably should have suggested the restaurant. I wasn’t thinking. I’m sorry.”

Kostya kept his hand on her lower back as he ushered her down the hallway to the elevator. “It’s okay, I somehow managed,” he teased.

“Uhm, right.” She shot him an apprehensive smile.

“Are you nervous?”

“Nervous no. Is my stomach a little fluttery? Yes.”

Kostya pressed the button for the elevator and it slid open. There wasn’t anyone inside, and they got in. He looked her over. The fact that such an accomplished and well-traveled woman, a woman who had stood up to an entire team of SEALs, was fluttery about a date with him was…interesting.

He smiled.

“Lark, youdoknow we’re going to have a great time, and nothing’s going to happen that you don’t want to happen.”

She turned to look him in the eye. “Well, that’s what has me worked up. I’m not quite sure what I want to have happen.”

He raised his eyebrow and she blushed.

“Okay, maybe a couple of possibilities have run through my head.”

“Only a couple? Oh, Lark, I would have thought that somebody who studied creative writing at one point in time would have come up with hundreds of possibilities.”

She took a deep breath. Her breasts pushed up against the top of her dress and Kostya did his best not to stare.

The elevator opened to the lobby. When they got to the revolving door, he helped her on with her coat. He tilted his head to the valet and the kid hustled to get a blue SUV that was parked up front.

“Kostya, did you rent that? Dammit, I wasn’t thinking at all; you didn’t need to do that. I rented a car when I took the train from Manhattan. I should have picked you up from the airport.”

“Lark, take it easy. Everything’s good.” He slipped the tip to the valet and opened up the passenger seat for Lark and made sure her coat was tucked in before getting into the driver’s seat.

“Seriously, Kostya, I’m usually more aware than this. I think it’s the story I’m working on.”

“Do you want to tell me about it?”

“Not right now. Right now I want to focus on you. I mean, our date.”
