Molly nodded and then turned to Ruby. She took her arm in a friendly way and began walking them in the direction of their truck. She spoke low, “You okay?”
“Just a bit of pain in my side. It’s fading.”
“Bull. You can barely walk. It might be the baby.”
“I wondered. But I don’t think so. I just need to sit for a while. It’ll go away.”
“Sweet Lord Jesus, you sound just like Kurt. Can you drive?”
“Yeah. I’ll rest while you get what you need for dinner.”
“I’ll only be a few minutes. Stay out of trouble, you hear?”
“Yes ma’am.” Ruby recognized her brave words for the ridiculous statements they were. Her side was killing her.
