“Good, because I’m not sharing you either.” She arched her back and pressed her lips back to mine. “Still such a caveman.”
I laughed against her lips. I was a lot of things when it came to Peyton—distracted, possessive, and foolish.
Which one would pull us under first?
TWENTY-TWO
PEYTON
“The lake is nice. I can see why you love it.”
I rubbed my hands together after I climbed back into the passenger seat of his truck. Jake’s lips were glorious enough to distract me from the cold, but now that we weren’t rolling around on top of each other, I couldn’t shake the chill running through me.
“I loved it today because of the company,” he said, taking my hands in his big ones and lifting them to his mouth. “But I didn’t want you to freeze.” He blew on our hands, the wet warmth from his mouth causing another kind of shiver.
“Thank you for bringing me here. And you’re right, better to talk where it’s too cold to get naked, right?”
He flicked his gaze to mine, a wicked grin splitting his mouth.
“Come here, I’ll warm you up,” he rasped, hauling me to him and covering my mouth with an achingly slow kiss. His tongue made long and languid strokes, seeking and exploring as I whimpered. When he slanted his mouth over mine to go deeper and harder, heat pooled between my legs as I melted against the seat.
I climbed over the console and onto his lap, straddling his hips and rocking against him as our mouths kept moving. Even with two layers of denim between us, I could feel his cock swell under me. He slipped his hands under my sweater and cupped my breasts. I went from freezing to on fire as I searched for the zipper on my jacket. Jake caught my hand and broke the kiss, panting as he dropped his head to my chest.
“No. Not like this.”
“Well, no. We’ll eventually run out of room and have to head to the back seat.” I chuckled and dove back in for his lips, but he shook his head.
“When I make love to you, we do things the right way. In a bed, where I can have you all night, not fumble around in my back seat. As tempting as it is.” He grabbed my face and pressed his forehead into mine. “What the hell are you doing to me?”
“I could ask you the same thing.” A breathless laugh fell from my lips. “Want to go back on the grass and cool off?”
He tilted his head and laughed.
“I don’t think it’s possible for me to cool off around you.” He pressed his lips to mine with a featherlight kiss and backed away. “Let me take you home.”
I nodded and crawled back to the passenger seat.
“Why can’t I get this? It buckled before ...” I groaned, stabbing the fastener with no use.
Jake reached over me, taking the buckle out of my hand and pressing his lips to mine as he pressed himself against me, just like that first day in his truck, except we both leaned into it instead of freezing up. He smiled into the kiss as the lock clicked.
“That’s what I wanted to do that afternoon you were in my truck. I had you all to myself for a day, and I couldn’t do a damn thing about it.”
“You can now.” I grazed my thumb along his bottom lip, still wet from our kiss. “The back seat isn’tthatsmall. You drive a truck.” I looped my arms around his neck. “We could maneuver a little bit,” I teased, holding in a laugh at the heat in his eyes, now thinned to slits. “If I got on top, we could save room.”
“So another man could see you and watch you come? Absolutely fucking not.” He growled and started the engine.
“You’re no fun.” I jutted my lip in a mock pout.
He leaned over and took my lip in between his teeth, giving it a nibble as he pulled away.
“My eyes only, sweetheart.” He pecked my lips before putting the truck in drive and heading away from the lake.
A bed with Jake all night sounded like the best kind of dream. But at this point, it was still just that—a dream. He had a son at home who couldn’t know about us, at least for now. We would keep running into each other, but when was the next time we could be just us? When would I be able to kiss him whenever I wanted to and touch him just because I could?
“Do you want to come inside? See my new wall?” I joked when Jake pulled up in front of my condo.
Jake shot me a crooked grin. My heart stuttered and then sank at the intrusive memory of the last time I could only see the man I was with at my home in secret. This wasn’t that, and Jake was a good man and not a liar who was using me, but keeping what we had a secret, even if I agreed it was the best thing to do right now, still left a familiar and unwanted taste in my mouth.
