There was silence on the other end. Begrudgingly he said, “I’ll make the arrangements.”

Paolo hung up as he saw Lyric approaching the car. She slammed the door as she got in. “I don’t like being ordered around.”

Paolo grinned, cutting his eye at her. He could see her fuming. That fire in her turned him on. She was perfect for him, but he wasn’t worthy of her.

“You’re safest with me,” he resigned.

Lyric huffed. “Well, at least tell me where we’re going.”

Paolo pulled into the flow of traffic, headed for the highway. “We are going to my condo. Then we’re going to call your school and pay your tuition.”

Lyric’s eyes jerked to his face. “What the fuck do you mean?”

“Just what it sounds like. There is no need for you to struggle anymore. You have me,” he reasoned.

“I don’t even fucking know you,” she shrieked. “There is no way I’m going to let you pay my tuition.” Knowing it would piss her off, he smirked, but his girl had a pottymouth. Even though he liked that aspect of her, it didn’t matter to him.

Paolo turned to her as he merged onto the highway.

“I don’t expect you to let me do anything, Lyric. I do what I want.”

She sputtered, not knowing how to respond to him. Then she was silent. He’d eventually have his way. There was no use trying to fight him. If he wouldn’t allow himself to be with her, the least he could do was arrange things so she wouldn’t have to struggle when all this was over.

Damn, I’d have to fire her too.

He could not see her every day at the club and not want to fuck her or be with her. He wouldn’t put himself through that torture. His restraint and willpower when it came to Lyric were painfully non-existent.

They pulled into his parking garage. Paolo waited for the gate to open and nodded to the armed men patrolling as he pulled through.

“Why the muscle?” Lyric asked.

“Capo of Miami. I’ve made a lot of enemies since taking over for my father.” There was no need to elaborate; his life and past was what it was.

“And where is your father now?” The question caught him off guard as he pulled into the space beside his SUV.

“Off in the Caribbean somewhere.” Paolo shrugged. “Doesn’t even know his father is dead.”

He pushed the door open, then rushed around to help her out of the vehicle. Questions swam in her eyes, and he held his palm up, halting them. He didn’t want to talk about all of it right now. Or ever, for that matter.

“Come on.”

He urged her to the elevator, well aware of the skirt and tank she decided to wear, along with a small pair of black flats. The skirt showed off her shapely legs. He could still feel them wrapped around his waist as he drilled into her last night. Damn, that was the best fuck of his life. He was getting harder by the minute as the elevator continued to ascend.

“Are you going to finally tell me what’s going on? Why did you buzz me last night? I’m sure it wasn’t just to fuck me.”

The venom in her voice brought him out of his lustful haze. The hurt in her eyes was evident. He needed to choose his words carefully. He was a mean son of a bitch, but he would never hurt Lyric maliciously. They stepped off the elevator and entered his condo. Paolo ushered her to the couch. He guessed it was time to come clean. He didn’t want her thinking he was only there for her pussy.

“No, I didn’t come there to fuck last night. I came there to protect you.”

“Protect me?” she asked, concern etched on her brow.

The hurt he saw in her eyes from earlier was now gone. He would just have to say it.

“Lyric,” he sighed. “Because of me, your life is in danger.”

“What do you mean?” She jumped from her seat and paced. “Paolo, stop talking in fucking circles and just tell me.”

He ran his hands through his hair. Why the hell was this so hard?
