“Um, yeah. Walnuts, why?”
“Can’t eat them.” He shook his head. “Make my throat close up.”
Nell’s mouth dropped open, but then she shut it. “But the walnuts were in your cupboard next to the oatmeal.”
“Those belonged to Susan.”
“Oh.” She frowned. “But didn’t you say you like trail mix?”
“Right. Yeah, I do.” Grant snapped his fingers. “Only I make mine with peanuts. Walnuts are tree nuts.” He shrugged. “You can eat the apple bread, though. Or freeze it to take back with you later.”
She crossed her arms. “I thought you said you eat just about everything?”
He rubbed his chin. “Within limits.” He stared at the refrigerator and sighed. “No worries. I’ll just grab an apple in the meantime.” He opened the refrigerator, but they were all gone. She’d used every last one in that apple bread.
He turned to Nell, and she covered her mouth with both hands.
“Oh no. I used them all up with the applesauce.”
He frowned when her cheeks sagged. “No worries, sweetie pie. I’ll be fine until lunch. Why don’t you finish up in here, and then call me when it’s ready?”
“Where will you be?”
“Getting my fishing gear together.” He grinned broadly and patted his chest. “After yesterday’s heavy rainfall, the fish will be jumping.”
Chapter Fourteen
Nell put away the last of the groceries and sighed. She ought to be happy about how things were going. She and Grant were exclusive, yay! Besides that, he’d asked her to stay on at his cabin so they could work on their relationship together, which sounded dreamy.
Still, today was a far cry from yesterday when Grant had been the pamperer and she the “pamperee.” Not that she expected anyone to dote on her all the time, but the change had been so…abrupt.
She sat down at the kitchen table to rest her sore ankle after propping her foot on a chair and topping her wrapped ankle with a bag of frozen corn. The ice pack that Grant brought her was still in the freezer chilling up.
Grant cracked open the back door. “Is lunch ready?”
Ugh. She’d barely sat down. “Not yet! But soon!”
“Well, don’t take too long. Daylight’s burning!”
Sure. Nell picked up the frozen corn and dropped her right foot to the floor.Ow!
She should probably take it easy this afternoon. Maybe Grant would carry her down to the waterfall again so she could watch him fish? That would be relaxing and fun. She could even take her knitting and work on that. She only had a few more days before his birthday to finish his hat, and she was excited about giving it to him. He was going to be so surprised.
And in a much better way than he’d been surprised about the camping.
And the hiking.
But there, she’d done it.
She’d admitted the truth to him about both those things, and he’d handled the situation reasonably well.
Better than well. He’d been loving and supportive. Understanding, even.
Maybe it would be the same when she told him about Aidan?
She bit her lip. She hoped.
Nell got to work making the sandwiches, but the bacon cooked up really weird-looking and not crispy. Well, okay. If Grant liked things that way. She’d found potato chips when she’d put things away, so he wasn’t a total health nut. At least they had that in common. She added some chips to their plates, and pickle spears, too.
