“Yes. I’d like the largest size you’ve got of Blueberry Cheesecake Pralines and Cream.”
A brunette backed out of the kitchen carrying a stack of clean dishes and mugs that she set on the counter near Lucas. “I’ll get it!” She stared at Grant with big blue eyes. And there’s Charlotte.“Grant, hey!”
“Hi, Charlotte.” He smiled politely, figuring it couldn’t hurt to be nice to Nell’s sisters. He and Nell could start dating soon. Exclusively, if she agreed.
Misty set down her phone, looking surprised. “Grant. What are you doing here?”
Wasn’t that obvious? “Picking up breakfast.”
“For Nell? Aww.” Misty pressed her hands to her heart. “Aren’t you thesweetest.”
Lucas watched their exchange in an odd way, and Grant got the feeling he was paying extra special attention to Misty.
Hang on. Was Lucas crushing on her?
If he was, Nell’s youngest sister was oblivious.
A woman with graying hair made her way out of the kitchen juggling several one-pound bags of freshly roasted coffee beans in her arms. “Oh Misty! Can you please—” The shape and color of her eyes reminded him of Nell’s. “Grant?”
He nodded deferentially. “Good morning, Mrs. Delaney.”
“Good morning.”
Seconds later, an older guy with a round face emerged through the kitchen door, carrying more bags of coffee. “Hello. You’re Nell’s friend, aren’t you?”
“Yeah, Mr. Delaney. Good to see you.”
Lucas relieved Mr. Delaney of his coffee bags and began helping Misty stock the shelves near the register with the bags she’d taken from her mom.
An awkward silence ensued as they all watched Grant. He felt like a fish in a fishbowl. What? Was it written all over his face? Maybe he had that lovesick puppy dog look? Charlotte grinned with a knowing gleam in her eyes.
Yep. Guess so.
How embarrassing.
“One Blueberry Cheesecake Pralines and Cream coming right up. Extra-large.” Charlotte winked at Misty, then turned to Grant. “Whipped cream with that?”
He shifted on his feet. “Sure.”
Lucas shook his head. He was apparently used to these family dynamics and secret code messaging between the Delaney sisters. Grant suspected Nell could send and receive those, too. Telepathically.
Charlotte got busy making the coffee. “How’s Nell doing?”
“Actually, a lot better.”
Misty blinked. “Better?”
He studied their perplexed expressions. “Didn’t she tell you?”
“Tell us what?” asked Charlotte.
“She fell, or stood, really. Got up too fast and twisted her ankle.”
“Got up?” Charlotte asked, latching on to that detail. “From where?”
“Yeah,” Misty said. “What were you guysdoing?” She grinned at Charlotte, clearly getting the wrong impression.
Not good. Especially in front of Nell’s parents.
