A stupid smile spread across her face as Wolf reached for her hand. They ran for the front door like they couldn’t get there fast enough. He barely got a light flicked on when she made her move and grabbed the front of his shirt. She jumped up onto his body, locking her legs around his waist. He didn’t push her off, and her heart soared as his lips found hers. She didn’t pay attention to where he was taking them, but as a door closed and her back pressed against it, she knew they were in his bedroom.

“You looked so beautiful tonight,” Wolf said as they came up for a breath. “I couldn’t take my eyes off of you.”

Maeve could feel the blush creep across her cheeks until her face felt like it was on fire. “Yeah?”

Wolf kissed her neck, his lips as soft as wings as they brushed over the hummingbird tattoo. She tilted her head to give him better access and moaned loudly as he sucked on a sensitive spot. “Yes, you looked like a delicate bird floating on the breeze, Walela.”

Another soft moan left her lips with the sound of the nickname.

“I love it when you call me that.” She could feel him grin before he said it again, his voice vibrating against her skin. Her legs tightened around his waist as the desire to be closer to him reached another level. Wolf pulled away from the door, his hands expertly unzipping the back of her dress.

Quickly, she stripped completely naked for him, but this time, she was shy about him seeing her. As they reached the bed, she unlocked her legs and allowed herself to slip down the front of his body. She stood before him, waiting.

He raised her arms out to the side and stared at her body, and she swallowed hard with the look he was giving her.

“Do you know how sexy you really are?”

She looked away from his intense gaze. He was doing it again. He was peering into her and pulling out the insecurities that lay under her bravado. Cupping her chin, he made her look at him.

“You are beautiful, Maeve. You don’t need to put on a show or dress up. You simply are.”

Before she could cry, he kissed her, which was soft and warm. She ran her fingers into his dark hair and loved that he groaned for her. He laid her out on the bed, and the kiss intensified as his hand explored her body. It skimmed over her breast, his thumb rubbing back and forth over her nipple, making her squirm.

Wolf pulled away and stood as he undid the jeans he was wearing. How could she be this nervous? Sex wasn’t new to her, yet it felt different and special, and she didn’t want to fuck it up.

The jeans fell down his muscled legs, and the man that stood before her was a work of art. Wolf laid down on the bed and peppered her stomach and ribs with soft kisses, each one adding an extra beat to her fluttery heart. When his mouth reached her lips, nagging guilt formed in her chest.

No, not now. Why now?

She tried to push the guilt away but couldn’t and pulled back from the kiss. The man was in the exact position she’d been trying to get him in for weeks. The cock pressing into her leg told her exactly where this would go, but she had to be honest with him first.

“What is it,” he asked, his voice soft as he used his knuckles to draw soft lines against her cheek. “Do you want to stop? We can stop if you don’t want this, Maeve.”

She closed her eyes and shook her head as she mulled over the words she needed to say in her mind.

“That’s not it. Trust me. I want you.”

“Okay, then what is it?”

“I saw your folder on the table the other night. Before you put it away, I read through what was sent to you about me.”

“Oh, okay. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have left it out like that. I don’t normally bring my targets home. Did the information upset you?”

He was still so nice to her, even knowing all the crap she’d done. She wanted to punch herself in the face.

“No, not at all. I unfortunately really did almost all of that except the murder. I didn’t kill the detective. But the file had a detail wrong.”

He cocked his head and leaned back onto his arm. Maeve’s throat felt dry as she stared into his eyes. She had no idea how he was going to take this. She didn’t move or say another word.

“Are you going to tell me?” he said.

She licked her lips, her mouth suddenly dry.

“The file says I’m twenty-three, but I’m not.”

He continued to stare at her calmly, and she hated that he could interrogate her without a single word. Her heart was like a rabbit in her chest. “I’m nineteen.”

The words had the exact effect she was scared they would have. She could see the knowledge filter into his brain and the panic it induced as if she’d just told him she’d planned on killing him. His eyes went wide as he shot up from the bed.
