She reached into one of the buckets set up with ice and pulled out a bottle of water when the hair on the back of her neck stood up. Maeve spun around and looked up into Unole’s rage-filled face.
“Enjoying yourself,” he asked.
She flicked her gaze from side to side, and although she wasn’t far away from the group, she felt like the gazelle that had separated from the group and was now facing down a lion.
“As a matter of fact, I’m having a great night.” She stepped to the side to walk around him, and he stepped into her path. Her hand tightened around the plastic bottle as she prepared herself to fight. “Kind of a stupid place to harass me, don’t you think? All these witnesses around?”
His eyes narrowed into slits as he put his hands on his hips in his attempt to intimidate her. She had to wonder how she ever thought this guy was hot.
“You made me lose my job.”
Maeve stared up at him as her own anger sparked to life.
“I’m pretty sure your asshole behavior got you fired, but the fact that you think I did this to you speaks to just how out of touch with reality you are. Now get out of my way before I decide to make a scene.”
Maeve stepped to the side to make her way past Unole when his hand shot out and grabbed her by the bicep.
“You’re nothing but a nasty little cock tease,” he growled out as his hand gripped her arm tighter, his fingers digging into her skin.
“I don’t care what you think, but you better get your hand off me, now,” she whispered, glaring at him.
“Really? Or What?”
She’d had enough of this guy. Using a move that Morry had taught her, she jumped toward Unole’s body but brought her knee up as she did. She caught him perfectly off guard, and he yelled as her knee connected with his crotch. With a quick twist, she broke the loosened grip on her arm and followed the movement with an elbow to the jaw. She managed to get him right on the bone. He crumpled to the grass in a heap.
“You’ll pay for this,” Unole groaned in pain.
She’d learned the hard way that you don’t just walk away at this point. You needed to finish the job. She dropped a knee onto his chest to drive all the air out of his lungs and would’ve slammed her fist into Unole’s nose, but the movement running toward her caught her attention.
Wolf had made his way out of the inner ring and was running in her direction. Maeve reigned in the white-hot anger and pushed herself to her feet.
Her body lit up brighter with every stride Wolf took, his eyes never wavering from her own. He skidded to a stop as she stepped away from Unole.
“I’m going to kill him,” Wolf said, reaching for Unole, but she stopped him with a hand on his arm.
“Don’t. This is far more humiliating for him. He got bested by a girl a third of his size in a dress.” She turned her attention to the man on his hands and knees. “Maybe next time when a girl tells you no, you’ll actually listen.”
Maeve looked around and realized that almost everyone had turned to watch the drama unfold, and a few had a camera out filming the altercation.
Great, just great.
Wolf grabbed her hand, and she could feel his body shaking as he pulled her away from Unole, who was trying to stand.
“Are you okay,” he asked as soon as they’d put some distance between themselves and Unole.
“Yeah, I’m fine. I’ve been taking care of myself for a long time. Men like Unole are sadly common everywhere.”
“Waya, what happened?” His father asked as he jogged over.
“Unole happened again,” Wolf snarled, and his Dad nodded.
“I’ll go speak to him,” his Dad said, leaving them alone, but eyes from all around were still focused in their direction.
Maeve ran her fingertips up and down his arm until his expression softened. “Waya, I’m okay, really.”
Wolf sucked in a deep breath. “I’m done for the night. Did you want to get going? The party will continue for a few more hours, but I don’t feel like staying.”
She was shaking like a leaf at the sound of his deep voice. It was like she instantly lit up at the thought of being alone with him. As his eyes found hers, she could feel the heat in them, but she had no idea how he acted so unaffected while she was reduced to a stuttering mess.
