She laughed as they moved into the bedroom. As she stared into his loving eyes, the scars of the past and the questions that still needed to be answered were pushed aside. Right now, being here with him was what mattered. If life had taught her anything, it was that she never knew what was around the corner, and she had to make the most of every happy second she was given.
Wolf finished highlighting the route he was planning on them taking. The map he’d dug up from a stack of papers was old, but it still had all the backroads he was looking for and the visual of how to get to Morry’s without going near a main road.
“It will take us longer, but this is the best way to go and not be seen,” he said, pointing to the faded yellow line from the old highlighter he’d found.
“How much longer?”
“A day at the most. The goal is not to have people calling in a suspicious-looking black Hummer, so we stick to the speed limit and get gas where I’ve marked. I know those gas stations don’t have cameras, and the roads at night have very little traffic.”
Maeve nodded as she stared at the paper map that was taking up the entire surface of the small kitchen table, and he couldn’t stop staring at her. Until now, he’d purposely look away before his mind decided to travel down the road of getting her naked. But now he was free to look, and it felt like he fell further in love with her every second they were together.
If he hadn’t just fucked her for another whole day, he would’ve suggested staying where they were. Secretly, he didn’t want to leave the cabin. This place held Jimmy’s spirit inside it, and he felt safe tucked away in the middle of nowhere with Maeve, but as soon as they pulled out of this driveway, they were fair game all over again.
“I see you staring, and I know what you’re thinking. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but no, not right now.” Maeve looked up, and his body warmed with the teasing look she was giving him.
“It’s not my fault you walk around looking that sexy.”
He made his way around the table, and Maeve giggled and stepped around the other side until he was chasing her in a circle. Duke was barking excitedly at their antics, which made them laugh harder. Changing directions quickly, he grabbed Maeve around the waist and lifted her in the air with a shriek. He sat her on the table, the map crinkling with the movement as he stepped between her legs.
“How did I get so lucky?”
Maeve wrapped her arms around his neck and gave his chin a soft kiss. “I could ask the same question. I see you worrying, but we need to go. We can’t stay here forever, and it’s the safest place to be right now.”
“I know. I guess I just wish we could stay here forever and pretend the world doesn’t exist.”
“You’d eventually miss your ranch,” Maeve said, and he looked down.
“You mean whatever is left of it.”
“Shit…I’m sorry, Waya, I forgot about that.” She hugged him tightly, and he sighed into her hold.
“It’s okay. We can rebuild. Bright side?” She nodded. “This time, you can help make it our home. We get to build our own place from the ground up,” he said, leaving out his unspoken, ‘if they lived through this,’ thought.
They were both thinking about it, but there was no point in voicing the concern.
“I’d like that.”
Cupping her face, he gave her forehead a kiss. “We better get going. It’s almost dark.”
Maeve slipped off the table and grabbed a couple of bags already prepared by the door. “I’ll start loading the Hummer.”
He watched her walk out the door, then turned to grab the remaining items they decided to bring and froze. He heard the engines before Maeve yelled.
“Waya, they’re here!”
Pulling the gun from his holster, he ran for the door and burst through the screen like a man possessed. “Get in the Hummer.”
Maeve yelled for Duke to get in instead of barking at the arriving lineup of black trucks. Wolf opened fire on the first truck that came to a stop as he rounded the driver’s side of the vehicle and yanked open the door.
“Fuck!” He yelled as he jumped in, knowing that the few seconds with his back turned had given them all the opportunity they needed, and a fucking bullet had found his arm.
“Get in, now,” he yelled as he looked down at the blood soaking through his shirt. He couldn’t worry about that now. It wasn’t his dominant arm, and it was a through and through. For now, he’d live.
Maeve slammed the back door and hopped inside as those arriving tried to surround the Hummer.
“We’re blocked in,” Maeve said, looking around as they moved in, blocking their path out the main driveway.
“No, we’re not.” Wolf revved the Hummer. “Not yet.” He floored it in the opposite direction of the driveway as dirt billowed into the air.
