“I have to, Maeve.” He pulled his hand from her grip. “I’m serious. You need to forget about me. I don’t exist.”

“Mercurio, please.”

He glared at her, and she shrunk back from the hard stare. “Mercurio is dead, and you will be too if you don’t forget about me. This isn’t a game anymore Maeve, you need to stay here and you need to forget who I am, maybe even who you are.”

Maeve clutched her bag to her chest as he walked away and left her there. The door screeched loudly, and a man stepped out. She looked up at the man in the blue uniform and cried harder.

Maeve coveredher mouth as she held back the tears. She couldn’t decipher her feelings as they swirled around inside her head in a jumbled mess. Fear, anger, and sadness were at the top, but betrayal was rancid in her mouth. He took her and then left her. Soft whining had her opening her eyes to see Duke sitting in front of her. As soon as their eyes met, he placed his head in her lap.

“More memories or just couldn’t sleep?”

Startled by the sound of Wolf’s voice, her head snapped up. He was standing just inside the kitchen, and she warmed as she looked up at him. The light was hitting his eyes in just the right way that they seemed to glow, and for the briefest of moments, it was like she was staring into a set of real wolf eyes.

“Both.” She focused her gaze on Duke and her hand running through the soft fur that was always so comforting. “He left me at a fire station and told me to forget him. I was so scared, and then the home I ended up at….” She shook her head as anger was becoming the front runner inside her. “Dean did this to me. He’s the reason I turned into the damaged thing I am now. How do I ever forgive him? Is he still alive? Did he make it back? Where is he now? Can we go speak to him,” she asked in quick rapid fire.

“First, you’re not damaged. Yes, as far as I know Dean is alive and he made it back from overseas. I don’t know where he is, but Morry might. If we can find him, we will go speak to him, but as far as forgiving him…you wouldn’t have met me.”

“What?”

Wolf walked forward and held out his hands for her to stand, and as she did, he cupped her face and kissed her long and slow. Even with everything else going on in her mind, he somehow managed to settle her, relax her and make her feel like the world would be okay again. Lifting his head, Wolf touched his forehead to hers.

“We all walk our own path to who we become. You have scars that I wish you never received, but those same scars have made you into the fearless woman you are now. The woman that can see the beauty in all things and the one that has stolen my heart. We do not know what led Dean to take you, Walela, but I can say for certain that the road he put you on led you to me.”he said and pulled her into a hug.

“I would be lying if I said I would be happy if we never met. It is selfish, and I try never to be selfish, but I love you. I can’t bring myself to be sad that we found one another. Does that mean I’d put your pain above my own happiness? No, but there is always light inside the dark if we are willing to look. You are my light as I am yours, and if we’d met under different circumstances, maybe that wouldn’t have been the case.”

Pulling back, she stared up at his handsome face with his square jaw and eyes that had always been able to see inside her soul.

“How are you always so calm? So rational?”

“Many more years of practice,” He teased and smirked that grin that she only ever saw him give her, and her body tingled.

“Such a smart ass,” she laughed and rolled her eyes. “Your file had something else correct in it.”

He pulled her in closer to his body, his hands warm on her lower back, and she felt like curling up on the couch and just letting him hold her. “Oh yeah, what’s that?”

“Today is my birthday. I’m officially twenty.” She smirked and slid her hands down his back until she could grip the hard muscles of his ass. He really did have the best ass.

“That’s great. Now there are only thirteen years between us.” He laughed as she gave his ass a smack.

Dropping his head to her neck, he trailed a line of kisses along the skin. “And what would the birthday girl like for her big day?”

“Aside from answers? I want to take you back into the bedroom and have you fuck me senseless, and then I want some of that French toast you make.”

She could feel him smiling against her neck a moment before his teeth grazed her skin. Wolf had a way of making her heart pound like no one else.

“All very doable gifts. The answers we’ll worry about once we get up, but first, I’m going to give you your other two gifts.” His fingers smoothly undid the couple of buttons on her plaid shirt. “I really do love you in my shirts.”

A tremble started in her knees as the shirt fell open and his warm hands gripped her waist. His hard cock was pressing into her stomach, and she looked down at the tent in his boxers and smiled.

“To think that by this time next year, we’ll probably have our own baby.”

“What makes you think that,” he asked and then groaned as she wrapped her hand around the long length. She smirked at the wet spot that had formed in his boxers. There was no better drug to her system than knowing that she turned Wolf on as much as he lit her body on fire.

“Because I track my cycle, and this whole week has been my most fertile and when I ovulate.”

Wolf shuddered, his muscles flexing as he suddenly picked her up so she could wrap her legs around his waist.

“Oh fuck, you couldn’t have said anything sexier to me.”
