“Fair enough. The bedroom is through that door. You can have the bed. I just made sure it was clean. Once I get the generator going, it shouldn’t be too long, and you can have a warm shower.” Wolf made his way to the door when Maeve called his name.
She wouldn’t look up at him as she spoke. “Why are you being nice to me?”
He rubbed at his chin and sighed. “Does there have to be a reason?”
She shrugged, one shoulder lifting and dropping in a non-committal fashion, but the wince she made said just how much pain she was feeling. “Most people want something in return. I’m just wondering what you want?”
Maeve turned her face up to him, and he tried to read the expression she was giving him.
“All I want is the truth. Let me get these chores done, and we can talk. You can start at the beginning of this mess, and then I’ll decide what I’m going to do. I will not hurt you, Maeve unless you force me to. And, I don’t want anything in return.”
That wasn’t entirely truthful if he was being honest with himself. He wanted to know a lot more about her. There was something alluring about Maeve, and it had been a very long time since his heart was interested in anyone or anything other than work.
With that, he took his chances that Maeve was telling the truth when she said she’d remain there and walked out the cabin door.
Maeve’s eyes followed Wolf as he left, and then sat there waiting for him to come back, saying he’d changed his mind.
Could she run and escape?
But when she moved a little, she had to bite her lip from crying out. Her side felt like she’d been stabbed. No, unless she was prepared to kill him, there was no outrunning this man.
She could admit to herself that being in the middle of nowhere with Mr. Hot and Sexy was not exactly a hardship, but she needed to find a way to convince him not to turn her in to the authorities. Even though her body was too sore and her brain was too tired, that didn’t stop her pussy from lighting up with the thought of just how she might be able to convince him.
Okay, enough of that.
She wiggled around inside the blanket that was shockingly tight and tried to make it loose enough so she could stand and investigate the cabin.
Bang!
The door swung in and slammed against the wall, making her jump. Leaves and dirt blew inside along with Wolf himself. He covered his face and pushed the door closed, locking it in place.
“Wow, that is one heck of a storm that has rolled in. It’s a good thing we found shelter when we did.” He shivered and proceeded to wipe the dirt off his body, and she couldn’t stop her naughty eyes from following every line of his muscled chest through the T-shirt he was wearing. “I see you decided not to run.”
“I couldn’t even if I wanted to. What the heck did you do to this thing? I feel like I’m inside of a burrito,” she said, pushing on the blanket to demonstrate.
A smirk that created dimples on his already too sexy face appeared.
“I kinda like the idea of you trapped.” He chuckled as he tossed his leather gloves down on the table. “Are you trying to tell me that with all you’ve been through, it’s a blanket that bests you? If I’d known that was all I had to do, I would’ve wrapped you up back at the motel. It definitely would’ve saved me a lot of hassle and a heart attack.” He crossed his arms over his chest like he was daring her to ask for help.
“Haha, you’re hilarious. Fine, you don’t want to help. I don’t need your help.” She struggled in the blanket and ignored the pain in her side until she was able to get a hand loose.
If he wanted to play games, she could most certainly play games. Standing, she felt like a kid in a sleeping bag but managed to let the material drop to the floor.
He hid the reaction well, but the subtle flare of desire in his eyes as he looked her up and down was not lost on her. She’d become a master at reading people. She stepped out of the blanket and then purposely turned, so her ass was facing him as she bent over and picked up the discarded material. Shaking it out, she turned and gave him a smirk of her own as she wrapped it around her shoulders and marched into the bedroom.
“Hey Maeve,” Wolf called out. and
She wiped the smile off her face before turning to face him. This was it, this was where he’d do the come-on line, and she’d get what she wanted.
“Yeah?”
“Try not to bend or twist too much. I think you have a couple of cracked ribs,” he said, then turned his back on her as he walked toward the kitchen cupboards.
She had to stop herself from letting her mouth fall open.
“Oh, and I got the generator going, in case you were wondering. The water should be warm in twenty minutes,” he said as she closed the door.
Well, that certainly didn’t go the way she’d expected.
