Trev turned to call out to her, but she was already gone. He stared up and down the beach, but he was once more alone.

Trev sucked in a deep breath and sat up straight in bed with a start. He rubbed at his eyes as the images of bright colors and the scent of jasmine still filled his nose.

“Are you okay?” Cody placed a hand on his shoulder just as his phone rattled on the nightstand.

“I will be. Give me a second,” Trev said as he grabbed the annoying device. Who the hell calls someone at three in the morning? “Mr. Anderson here. . .What? Why? That is no reason . . . Yes, I understand. When is she being moved?” He sighed as the information sank in. “Very well, I will be there shortly.” Trev hung up the phone and wanted to flop back down in bed, curl up with Cody and go back to sleep, but that was not going to happen.

“Who was that?”

He turned to stare into the inquisitive silver eyes. “They are moving Maeve to a maximum-security prison later today.”

“Holy shit, she hasn’t even had her trial yet, and they are sending her to max?” Cody sat up straight as Trev slipped his legs over the side to find his slippers.

“I know. Whoever is pulling the strings on this has deep pockets and a lot of pull. Neither is a good thing.” He made his way across the floor but stopped just before he stepped into the washroom. “Did you want to join me in the shower?”

A smile spread across Cody’s face as he jumped up and walked toward him. “Do fish live in water?”

“Is this a trick question?”

Cody laughed as he met him at the door. “No, it’s not a trick question. The answer is yes. The answer is always yes.

The stupid smile wouldn’t leave Cody’s face. He found himself more than once frozen with a spoonful of Lucky Charms halfway to his mouth as he thought about Trev.

“You do know it’s like seven at night, right?” Arek poked his head in the kitchen, startling him out of another revere.

“Yeah, just needed a snack. Did Trev say anything to you about when he’d be back?”

“Nope, and I don’t fucking care,” Arek grumbled and disappeared into the hall.

Cody sat the half-eaten bowl on the counter and jogged out to catch up to Arek. “Where are you going?”

“To see what I can find out at the races. That fucker Spike set us up. It’s time I paid him a visit.” Arek swung a black leather jacket on, the thing barely covering the knives and guns he had strapped to his body.

“Ok, first, Trev told us not to make a move without him saying so. Second, you can’t go with all those weapons.”

“First, I don’t give a fuck what my brother says—I’m keeping the jobs going, and I will do it without him if I have to. Second, I don’t give a flying fuck about the no-weapons policy. Every single one of them will end up with a new hole in their head until I find the answers I’m after.”

Cody groaned and rubbed his eyes. This was not going to win any points with Trev, but he couldn’t let Arek go alone. “Count me in. I need to know who got Ray killed.”

Arek studied his face and nodded. “Alright, go put more than that shit on. I don’t need any helicopter cock shows.” He nodded toward the grey sweatpants he was wearing, raising an eyebrow at the look.

“Five minutes.” Cody sprinted down the hall and managed to get changed and strapped in less than the allotted time. Good thing too, Arek was pacing the front hall looking ready to bolt faster than a groom with cold feet.

“Took you long enough,” Arek mumbled and then yanked open the door and stuck his head out to look around.

“What are you doing?”

“Making sure Trev didn’t pull in.”

“Are we fucking twelve now?” Cody crossed his arms over his chest as Arek turned to glare at him.

“Alright, hotshot, you call him and tell him where we are going and why.”

The smugness seeped away at the thought of that conversation. In fact, he was having second thoughts about going at all. He chewed on his lower lip as he contemplated the repercussions of this move.

“You can’t do it either. You’re just as big of a chicken shit.” Arek grabbed the Porsche keys off the decorative hook. “Here’s the thing, if we can get proof that Spike set us up and find out why, the mission will be looked at as a success, and Trev will put all this nonsense of leaving The Righteous behind.”

“Is that really a good thing? I mean, Renee would be happier if you quit, and it would definitely be safer all around if there were no more missions.”
