Rob nodded numbly.
“I can make up the sofa bed,” Thea said. “Or you can have the guest room if you promise to keep the door open.”
“I can keep the door open,” he murmured.
“You can close it while you’re changing, of course,” Thea said quickly. “Just while you’re actually asleep.”
“Yeah.”
“Do you want to go to bed?” Thea asked. “I’m sure you’re exhausted. On top of everything else, you had a big day of travel.”
“I did?”
She nodded. “I mean, I don’t know for sure, but I’m assuming you drove down from Chicago today.”
“Chicago?”
Her heart ached. He looked so lost. It was impossible to forget that she had loved him once. “Where you live,” she explained.
Rob nodded helplessly.
“We’ll work on sorting all this out in the morning,” she said. “For all we know, a good night’s sleep will be just the thing to help you recover your memories.”
“Okay.”
“Come on,” she said. “I’ll show you to the bedroom.”
She walked him in and handed him a towel and an extra pillow. “I’m right next door. Knock if you need me.”
He nodded. “I will.”
They stood face to face a moment longer, and then Thea turned away.
